Hi, i'm a freshman with cumulative GPA of 3.320 and got invited from two honors societies called Gamma Beta Phi and Sigma Alpha Lambda Honors Society.... I'm currently a computer science major and I don't know if joining these societies would be worth it for me... What do you guys think? Do you guys think it's worth $70 to join Gamma Beta Phi and $59 to join Sigma Alpha Lambda? I was researching for these two organizations, but not a lot of information was given in any website. All I know about these two organizations is that they offer scholarships (which I am aiming for) and community service...

I wouldn’t join unless they are sponsored through your school. I joined Phi Eta Sigma (freshman honor society) because it was a chapter officially organized and recognized by my university.

Linoch, I have been invited to every single honors society, the only one worth joining is Phi Beta Kappa. Unlike the other honors societies, Phi Beta Kappa is EXTREMELY selective and very prestigious.

I personally don’t put any weight in most of the honors societies (except Phi Beta Kappa, of course). I don’t see them as much more than a money grab and a waste of time, but I know people who disagree. If they want to spend the money, that’s fine with them. Personally not my thing. I could also see a major-specific honors society being helpful in terms of research and networking.

The opportunity for scholarships might be worth it though.
