For various reasons, I'm pretty sure I'm going to take a gap year next year (I'm a senior right now). What I was wondering though, is that since I'd be applying to colleges later (fall of the gap year), if I could submit standardized test results from later in my senior year (like spring semester of senior year) or if colleges would see that as totally not legit. Any insight would be appreciated. =)

When applying as a freshman, and regardless of how long you have been out of high school, you can submit any test scores taken by the deadline for such tests set by the college for 2011 admittees, e.g., if the school requires all tests to be completed by December 2010 for those applying for fall 2011 admission, you can submit any test scores that you take during or before December 2010.

Colleges don’t mind and the scores will be legitimate – after all, the SAT isn’t part of your high school diploma. As long as you can show a sufficiently good reason for your gap year, neither your test scores nor your gap year itself will hurt your chances for admission at an institution of your choice.
