Hi guys. I know that we’re all hyped-up about next week’s big decisions, and I’d hate to change the subject, but does anyone know what Brown’s policy is for deferring enrollment for a year? Also, if taking a gap year IS available, would you have to reapply for financial year next year? Thanks so much!

I'd imagine you'd have to reapply for financial aid but Brown happens ot be very good about people taking a year or semester off, whether it be before coming to Brown or while here. I'd imagine you'd have little difficulty (just talk to a dean, explain why you want to take a year off) getting approved to do so.

i'll second that...getting a deferrment granted for legitimate reasons is usually no problem, you just have to make a formal request to the admissions office

my guess is that you will have to apply for financial aid in the year you plan to matriculate

Yes, they definitely allow it. I've even heard of a guy deciding to do it after the deadline for letting Brown know, and he was still able to do it.

Thank you so much!

I took a gap year and deferred my admission for a year before coming to Brown. It was a really easy process; I called the Admissions office after I got my acceptance, told them why I wanted to defer, and made a note of it on the little response notecard (gosh it was nice that Brown didn't reqiure a deposit...). I had to reapply for financial aid, but it's nowhere near as complicated as when you first apply -- renewal apps are a breeze.
Good luck, I hope you get in, and I hope you enjoy your year off. EVERYONE should take time off.

does Brown want to see the proof?

good question. i would just call the admissions office and tell them that you want to take a year's deferral for medical reasons, and if they want proof, they'd say so. i can't imagine that they would, for two reasons: it's ridiculously easy to take leave for any reason once you're enrolled [ie, the university really doesn't pull the power card and ask for verification very often], and if they want you now, they'll want you next year, too.
good luck!

brownie-
just interested, but what did you do in your gap year? i am going to germany as an exchange student next year, and i'm interested to hear what other people have done. thanks for the info too.
