assuming that you are planning to take a gap year after Undergrad before going to med school (either delaying the enrollment or delaying the application year) and did a pure Course 7 and a minor in something.....

what can you do during the gap year? From what I understand from Prof. Sive's explanation during CPW Biology Open House, there are not much job openings for a person with just an undergraduate degree in the science fields.

Thanks!

One popular option is to work as a laboratory technician in a biology laboratory full-time. Lab techs get more research experience, can contribute to ongoing projects (especially if you choose to tech in your UROP lab), can get letters from the lab’s PI for medical school, and make about $30,000 a year. My lab has three technicians who are working for us while applying to medical school.

People also do things like Rhodes scholarships, but I suppose that’s not technically taking time off.

are they taking gap year too?

dumb question : does pi mean primary investigator? i came across with PI a couple of time during urop panel during cpw but never asked. :)

In addition, are there any one year masters program?

Yes, I mean that they’ve graduated from college and are working in the lab full-time right now.

PI means principal investigator. It’s an NIH term that’s used because it’s a lot faster than saying “the professor in charge of my lab.” :)

Rhodes scholarships are for one-year master’s programs in England. I don’t know of any in the US – there are very few biology master’s programs at US universities in general, especially top-tier ones.

how does Rhodes scholarship work for MIT students? is it the one that Melis the blogger got?
