My 11th grade son is leaning more & more toward a GAP year (to my relief).

He plans to apply to colleges with his class, get an acceptance, request a deferral. His school has very little experience with this. Is this how most GAP Year kids do it?

I thought the GAP experience could make him a stronger candidate and be a positive for apps. But, then again, this kid loves to procrastinate. His idea of applying with the class may be best.

^ That’s how my kid did it, and I think it is far preferable to having to go through the app process all on your own wherever you might be gapping vs. having the at school support of your GC and helpful community. Most colleges are happy to grant the deferral. Note, there’s usually a stipulation that you don’t attend another college during the year, with exceptions granted for foreign language/similarly unique instruction.

The year worked out great for mine! Good luck with your exploration of the concept!

PS, as for strengthening the app by waiting, the fact is, the greatest weight will still be given to his HS grades and test scores, plus several years’ track record of ECs, community service, etc. And considering he’d have to start applying the fall/winter right after HS, it’s unlikely he would’ve had enough time to accomplish something so amazing that it would tip the scales…although not knowing his plans, I guess I shouldn’t rule that out! Young people are incredible!

That’s what my son did, and it was wonderful. His gap year was just working at home, but still it was VERY nice that he didn’t have to bother with the stress of applications. Made the year lovely for all of us - he knew where he would be going and was happy with it. His chosen school actually offered it as an option on their acceptance letter.
