Gap Year During School

Hi everyone!

So I just recently learned that UCB is offering a design minor starting 2015 (but most likely won't be ready to go until 2016) and since I am a sophomore now, I highly doubt that I will be able to finish the minor in my senior year.

I was wondering then if I could take a gap year between say my sophomore year and my junior year to study/intern/work abroad to gain valuable business experience before coming back to UCB. One concern other than whether Berkeley allows this is whether Haas allows this. I am applying to Haas this year and my question is: if I get into Haas, how will my plans for a gap year be complicated?

Please and thank you!

Why don’t you just check with Haas?

Gap year is a great idea. I’m sure Haas will allow it. Harvard, Yale, all elite schools allow gap years.

the only reason to question is if you have a special financial situation that would prohibit you from taking a gap year. And know that if you take a year off, you need to start paying off your student loans once you leave the school.

Will I have to reapply for admission to Berkeley after my gap year?

No. Get permission from the dean of the school and talk with your advisors, first.
