Gap Year Ideas

Andi, I thought I’d pass this website along to you. It may not be something that would appeal to your son, but it will give you an idea of how to tailor a music-related sojourn from an arts/culture travel program.

My son joined an ARTIS program in Bali a few years ago and one of his group members was a girl who was studying music at Swarthmore. She wanted to advance her gamelan skills and the ARTIS group leader (an American theater professor and one of the world's foremost mask experts who’s married to a Balinese dancer) helped her get in touch with Balinese gamelan instructors. She joined the tour group half the day and studied independently half the day. I think she then stayed on for a few weeks on her own for research and travel.

My son spent his free time studying mask carving in a traditional village workshop. It was a wonderful experience, with just enough structure to make it manageable.
