Gap Year - Is it a good idea?

Right now, i'm considering taking a Gap Year after graduating from College, and i was wondering how College's will take this. By this i mean will it increase, decrease or make no difference to my chances?

Although not confirmed, i'm planning to work for around 9 months, whilst hopefully taking part in some volunteer/charity work.

You can defer for a year... it's definitely an option, so I don't think a college would take it the wrong way as long as you're doing something (the way you plan to).

The importance of a gap year really depends on the person. For some its great and for others it is either neutral or detrimental. It all depends on what you plan to do with it, something productive is always better than laying on the beach for a year.

typically students don't inform colleges of their choice to take a gap year, especially since applications are due in january and they might not have decided on their plans then. when you are accepted, you let them know you are deferring one year. it is quite common, and will not affect your chances of admittance.
