No matter what my parents of anyone else says, I am going to take a gap year or maybe a gap semester to go tour the caribbean. I don't know why I want to but maybe it's finally being an adult. How would a gap year affect my admission chances to WashU? Does anyone know anyone that has taken a gap year of know someone that has? I would be happy to hear!

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump

It would be best for you to apply as normal (as if you weren’t taking a gap year). Then inform the college you decide to attend that you would like to take a year off. Most schools will be fine with it. I did this with Wash U.

So WashU is fine with it. How long do they allow you to be gone?

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump

Friend’s daughter got into Wellesley this year. She told them she is taking a gap year and Wellesley is fine with it. She is going to travel around the world before starting college next fall.

As marcdvl suggested, apply, get acceptance and then ask for the gap year.

Part of being an adult is paying all your own bills. Are you paying for your trip? Your college?

I do plan on paying for the trip and I have been saving since I was ten and my 2 jobs. I do plan on financial aid for college and I will get in-state tuition.

Washington University in St. Louis is a private university; they don’t have in-state tuition. Tuition is the same for non-Missouri residents as it is for Missouri residents.

Are you talking about a different university in Washington state?

One thing to consider is what if it affects your eventual FinAid amount? Since you’ll be off another year, it’d be logical for WashU to assume you can earn an additional amount to contribute to your costs. Of course, they may waive that if you can show that you’re travelling for educational/enhancement reasons. But the burden of proof is on you.

Definitely apply now and get your acceptances lined up. Currently, you have the best access to your rec letter writers and school offices to get Transcripts to your target schools. It’d be foolish to leave HS w/o an accept letter in hand, with all the logistics settled and known by all parties.

it is possible to do a gap plus stipend year whereby you might offset some of your tuition [7 Questions to Ask When Considering a Gap Year - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/right-school/timeline/articles/2010/05/19/7-questions-to-ask-when-considering-a-gap-year)

great idea in my opinion. most will agree apply first, get in, then ask the school and they will normally be fine with your decision…

Admissions to any school should not be affected by the decision to take a gap year, but you have to get admitted first. Someone on CC had a daughter that took 2 years off from WUSTL and returned to the school without a problem.

Should go without saying but be sure to apply to more than just WUSTL that will let you take a gap year.
