<p>In the Education section of the application there is a question that ask about any interruptions in your education, I've selected did/will take a gap year. Subsequently, common app asks for me submit a word doc, that explains my selection. My question is does it have to be a descriptive essay much like the personal statement or is it just a regular explanation of why i'm taking a gap year.</p>

<p>Ummm…I’m in the same boat as you and frankly I’m no authority on this, but I plan on simply writing a brief para about why I’m taking a gap year.
I guess it’s best to send an explanation, particularly to highlight unusual circumstances such a family emergency, or something special you wanted to do during this time, mainly to prove that the gap year was necessary and/or productive and has benefited you in a positive way.</p>
