Gap Year thoughts

Hi! Discussion in our house surrounding gap year. Pros: Ability to perform in high school performances, save more money for college, taking outside acting classes during this summer, less time on college prep, attending auditions during gap year to get a feel for the lifestyle. Cons: no longer have the support of high school team, possible remorse as peers go to college.

I’ve read that some apply and are admitted, and then request to be deferred. I haven’t asked all schools, but the few BFA’s I’ve asked don’t defer. I will ask each school on out almost finalized list.

I’d love to get your thoughts from an acting perspective.

This has been discussed a fair amount recently— You may want to first check out these threads. Good luck!

Yes! @DoinResearch! As @connections pointed out-my D is livin’ it, as we speak! Feel free to post on the “Gap State” thread in the MT forum (my D is pursuing MT AND acting BFAs this next audition season), or PM me.

Thanks! I’ll head over to the MT threads! I never read those, and I should.

Son took gap year. Yes, you might feel left behind as peers go off to “the College Experience.” Some of them will also be experiencing College Debt. If you are involved in theater, you will have a social life. Pros outweigh Cons. I talk up gap years all the time with other parents.

I took almost 2 years off. Best decision of my life. When I got to college I wasn’t all lost and was already pretty professional and ready to take as much as I could from my experience.

So far, my D’s Gap Year is going very well. Each day, I feel more strongly that this was the right path for HER.

@owensfolks So glad you posted an update! Funny, this morning we were discussing the tasks and dates, and I again mentioned a gap year, and this time I think he was receptive. We’ll see what unfolds…
