Hello! I was just rejected from my top choice school, Tulane University. I applied RD but now I wish I had applied EA. I was wondering if it would be beneficial to take a year off after high school, and reapply early action? If I take a gap year, am I still allowed to apply as a freshman? During the gap year I would work, do community service, and improve my SAT score.Thank you!

What are you other choices? Gap year still allows you to apply as a freshman, usually with the condition that you don’t take any classes.

I applied to a few back up schools, but none that really interest me. Do schools look negatively upon gap years? If I took a gap year, I would apply early to Tulane in addition to other schools that I did not apply to before. I would not want to go to another school for a year then transfer, as I know that getting into Tulane as a transfer can be very competitive.

I’m actually on gap year now, it can definitely help if you use your time wisely. You would still come as a Freshman, if you don’t go to community college. I suggest looking at Americrops, City Year, & Student Conservation Assocation. You gain work experience & a educational stipend between $2,000-$7,000( depends how long the term you take. Some are a few weeks to a whole year.) Just make sure you have a game plan for your gap year, you want to start applying to jobs BEFORE your gap year, so once you start. You’ll won’t be sitting around for a few months. I also suggest seeing if your school takes “CLEP” courses. You can look that up on College Board.

Also do some traveling!

Thank you Jamker! I am hoping that with an improved SAT score, more community service and more job experience (and perhaps better essays), in addition to applying early decision, I will be accepted to my schools.

Oh, definitely! I would say the only downside is finding outside scholarships. Since alot are for those who are in school. The reason why I’m on a gap year mainly is because I graduated early from highschool & was unsure about my career choice. So this really helped me personally. Schools & scholarships will take your gap year highly as long as your doing something.

If you have any more questions just message me!

Tulane considers “level of applicant’s interest” and offers SCEA as well as EA. Students who have Tulane as their first choice should apply SCEA. <a href=“Application Instructions | Undergraduate Admission”>Application Instructions | Undergraduate Admission;

Realistically, unless you are close enough to the threshold of admission that signaling a greater “level of applicant’s interest” can tip the decision in your favor, retrying is likely to lead to disappointment a second time. If you take a gap year, you need to find a more realistic list of schools that you like, so that you will be happy to attend your affordable safety school.

I would apply SCEA if I took a gap year, not to mention an improvement in SAT scores (which were above the middle range for Tulane), and SAT II’s
