Gap Year?

No, I’ll likely be attending Wayne State in Detroit!

Wayne State is a commuter school, but I’ll likely be living on campus. I want to have that experience, and my parents don’t want me risking driving downtown though the snow every day!

That’s a very good point. Also, research shows that students who live on campus get better grades, are more involved, and have a better experience. And indeed driving downtown through snow is NOT a good idea if it can be avoided.
The key element here is that if you attend Wayne State, you’ll lose any hope at merit scholarships out of state, which means you’ll have to focus on private colleges. The academic quality there will hopefully be better than at Wayne State (ie., don’t apply to any private college that’s not at least as good at Wayne State) and of course apply to UMich, MSU, etc. You’ll have to educate yourself about smaller colleges - Hiram, Eckerd, Ursinus, are all excellent choices if your GPA is in the 3-3.5 range. If your GPA is better, you may have a shot at colleges as strong as Dickinson, Hamilton, UMiami, Tulane, etc.
