Im a junior and considering taking a gap year before going to college. Could i still apply to schools my senior year and attend after the gap year? Would my admission be guaranteed after i return?

yes, you can apply to schools during senior year. Even if you plan on a gap year, it is good to apply to schools during your senior year since the logistics (getting teacher recs, transcripts, etc) will be much easier while you are in school.

Once you are accepted into a school, you will need to write a letter requesting to defer your enrollment for one year. You will most likely need to explain why you are taking a gap year and what you will be doing during the year. Schools will also have some restrictions on what they find acceptable -- most schools will not allow you to enroll in college classes during your gap year.

Not all schools will defer enrollment -- check the school's website or ask the admissions office before applying (so that you don't waste your time).

two other things you need to check on if you are thinking of a gap year -- medical insurance and financial aid.

Most kids can only be covered under their parent's medical insurance up to a certain age and after that age, only if they are enrolled as full-time students. You need to make sure you have coverage.

Financial aid and scholarships -- you would have to refile your financial aid paperwork for the year again, a year later. keep in mind that money earned during a gap year by the student and any student assets are expected to be used primarily towards college expenses (FAFSA will expect 50% of all student earnings over $3000 and I believe it is 30% of all student assets). So working and saving during the gap year could dramatically increase your EFC.

Thank youu!
