Gap year

Hey i was wondering if anyone here knows how WUSTL admissions looks at a gap year?? thanks.

I thought about doing a gap year when I applied last year. I know that there is a statement in one of WashU’s FAQ’s saying that any student may request a year’s deferment before matriculation, although I couldn’t tell you what percentage of those requests are granted. If you have a no-nonsense reason for wanting it, I’m pretty sure you could get it though (just don’t enroll in another school’s degree program or commit a felony during that year)…

The normal process is to wait until you are officially “accepted” and then send the request BEFORE the date by which you’re supposed to decide which college you’re going to (normally May 1st I think?)… This way it won’t really affect your admissions chances, and if they say “no” you’ll have the chance to pick a different school, if it’s that important to you. I don’t know if you are allowed to defer until after a gap year if you apply ED though.

Thanks for your reply. I was actually asking in the case of already taking a gap year. I graduated from high school 2008 and am applying ED to WashU for fall 2009. I guess to word the question better would be, Does anyone have any information or even an opinion on how WashU weighs a gap year experience in the admissions process? Cause I have no idea. I understand if no one really does, but i thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

ooh ok i see. Yeah, I don’t really know about that then, except that you’ll definitely want to let them know if there’s a good reason behind the gap year… It really all depends on why you’ve taken a year off… wanting to spend 12 months as a bark-eating hermit carving signs of the zodiac into protected redwood trees would be probably hurt your chances of getting in, whereas wanting/needing to work for a while or taking time to get yourself ready for college would probably be just fine.
