My daughter has decided to take a gap year between high school and college. She would love spend the year overseas, engaged in a humanitarian or otherwise exciting project. She's been involved in her high school's Amnesty Int'l Chapter, but mostly she'd like to throw herself into something meaningful before returning to a classroom. Provided she finds something that fits the bill, we're willing to support her financially.
She very bright, very social, wants to be a writer, and hopes to attend college in NYC. Does anyone have any ideas for her, or any sense of how we go about finding something appropriate? thanks.

My D is doing a gap year this year with Global Volunteer Network. She spent fall semester in Honduras building sustainable housing and working in a day care with children. She is now in New Zealand working on an environmental conservation and habitat restoration project. GVN has other projects all over the world. CNN also published a list of top ten international volunteer programs. I found it helpful when researching my D’s gap year options. Any more questions, let me know. And good luck. By D has loved this year. It has been wonderful and she is much more excited and prepared to start college in the fall.
