Recently I've been interested in taking a gap year, but I was uncertain of how they work exactly. Lets say I apply to college and get in, and then choose the college I want to go to. I can then defer for a year to that college, and take a gap year, right? Do colleges have to approve deferrals, and can what you are doing change whether or not theyll allow for you to defer. Like, this may sound sort of crazy, but I have recently gained the desire of biking the Pan American highway route (from fairbanks, alaska to patagonia (tip of south america). If I get into college, could I defer and then during my gap year bike this route, or will colleges not approve of my deferral due to the fact that its not quite academic or community service oriented, etc.

Many colleges will allow you to defer your enrollment for a year, but they don’t HAVE to do so. So you’ll need to find the policies for each of the colleges you’re interested in.

it really depends on the college i think. you would have to contact colleges indiviually and ask or research their deferral policy.

or you could apply again after your gap year which some colleges favor

i think thats a really cool thing though and you should just do what you want reguardless of college.

good luck!

if you are getting drafted, would they let you take two gap years?
