Does anyone know how hard it is ti get in to the Garcia Center Summer Scholar Program? And also, do they accept students from out of state?
Thanks

Yes, they accept students from out of state. I did the program last year, and I'm doing it again this year. I know the professor very well, so I guess I had an advantage.. You must show that you won't need the professor to lead you by the hand. You must be a "go-getter." In terms of credentials it's not that hard. Give it a shot! Why not? Good luck!

How many students get accepted? (Sorry if I sound annoying)

no, no problem, ask away!
Well, I live on Long Island, so I know a bunch about the labs at Stonybrook. The Garcia Center gets A LOT more students that every other lab on campus. (This is somewhat because for other labs you have to contact the professor, and don't apply to a program.) Last year there were 45 people in her lab. I don't know how many people apply each year, but if you display interest and the fact that you'll be a self motivated worker, you'll probably have a high chance of acceptance. Where are you from?

Thanks! I am from Texas. I was a regional finalist for Westinghouse do you think that will help a great deal, or will it just be considrered nominal?

It will definitely help. The fact that you were a finalist means you know how to put together a good project, and she asks for previous research experience on the application. Like I said, you won't need her to tell you how to do everything. She's had students from Texas before, so she generally knows how kids do research there, so you won't seem random or anything.

Thanks for responding! I was also wondering does it cost money other than the lab usage fee or is that it?

Yes I believe the lab usage fee is all you have to pay.

Would it be possible if I can look at your application? It's fine if you don't want to show it to me, I just would like to get a grasp of how long I should make my answers

I made mine slightly longer than the blank space given in the application. Please be aware though that she knows my school and my town very well, so I might be at an advantage.
