Garcia Summer Research 2017

Wait why would you guess 8 am pst. Did they tell u that?

^ @BackOfTheBook

^^ @BackOfTheBook , where did you get that analysis?

my decision last year came out on March 28th (last monday of March) at 3:45pm EST so i don’t know how accurate 8am PST is. You all should definitely expect it tomorrow but the actual time is unknown so far. Regardless, good luck to everyone! @beast2718 @User19205234 @BackOfTheBook

Oh I just guessed because last time I got my application confirmation email around that time and when looking at previous threads, most people got acceptances/rejections during the morning. Prob not 100% accurate.

@jsoksDNA Did you get in? If you don’t mind me asking, what were your stats? I guess it doesn’t help now to try and speculate…
Edit: Ok wait you got in considering you started this :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

^^^ @jsoksDNA , what were ur stats/ECs/accomplishments/awards upon ur application?

Cool… I’m excited, but probably won’t be able to do it in the off chance I get in.

Edit: Whoops… didn’t see that last post… Like User19205234 it probably doesn’t matter now.

I’d prefer not to post my stats. All I’ll say is that I was on the lower end of last year’s group but I can safely say that everyone there deserves to be there. And you honestly don’t need to be a genius to succeed at Garcia. If you put in the work during the 7 weeks of the program, you’re bound to get something out of it.

@jsoksDNA I think many of us here are willing to put in the work. It’s a matter of if we will get in! haha, that’s why I’m so speculative at least, I’ve very little idea of Garcia’s application process and how selective they are (Obviously they are very selective, but still).

^Especially if you don’t live in NY like me

^^^ @jsoksDNA , it would be great help if you did share stats. We are all willing to work hard but we need to have gotten in to actually succeed at the program

The reason i don’t want to post my stats is because they don’t reflect the stats of a Garcia admitee. I’d prefer not to set a unrealistic expectation for all of you. I’ll try to get someone else to post stats because an acceptance with my stats is highly unlikely and posting them would be more detrimental than helpful

Well thanks in advance for getting someone else to post. It will definetly help get a better understanding of what the program is looking for

@juliag18
The stats are around what we had last year. I think u have a really good chance. Still, no guarantees until the results come out.

How important were essays, gpas, test scores, ecs and recs? For example, the essay accounts for 25% of the admission decision, gpa accounts for 45%…

From what I’ve seen, Garcia Center seems to value ecs, gpa and test scores a lot more than anything else. Am I right about this? @jsoksDNA , do you consider yourself average, above average or extraordinary in comparison to a regular american student? Did you think your essay was really good? What about recs? Do you live in the area or somewhere else? (also @Kurisutina could you answer the questions too?)

I don’t think I’m getting in but, I’m glad I applied. Do you think I would be able to email them and ask for tips for my app for next year?

Friend all you can do now is surrender to the whim of miriam

Surrender

Let it go

Sleep

@daru_nut damn inspirational

@BackOfTheBook
I can’t really respond to the percentage weighing part because in honestly I don’t know. However, I do know that I spent crap ton of time on my essays (though I don’t know if it really matters or not). I took it as an university application essay and in all honestly, I think the essays are even better than my university application essays.

Again, I don’t know how much it mattered. It may very well be true that if you have jaw dropping ECs and Test Scores, you get outright admitted even with crappy essays.

@BackOfTheBook @beast2718 im a garcia alum as well. applied out of state. ok stats i guess w/ a decent about of ecs. i cant remember what i wrote on my app bc im p sure its insignificant. the best thing u can do is pray, maybe build a shrine if ur desperate.

SAT/ACT: 35-40%
GPA/AP or IB courseload: 25-30%
ECs: 15-25%
Essays: 5-15%
Previous research experience and awards is a HUGE plus. If they are prestigious enough, they can boost ECs to around 50%

I consider myself significantly above average aka top 1-2% but I can’t really say as my high school is pretty bad (one of the worst in NYS in fact). I think thats probably the main reason for my acceptance honestly. Essays don’t r
