Garcia Summer Research 2018

Hi! I didn’t see a thread for Garcia 2018 so I decided to make one. I attended Garcia in the summer of 2017, so please feel free to ask any questions about the application, program, or anything else!

@behappy4142 How much did you have to pay in total to go there?

@victorchang Lab fees are $1600 but I stayed on campus, so in total it cost about $4000…it’s a bit expensive

is. there financial aid

@anonymous522083 no :frowning:

that might be a deal breaker

Hi! Thanks for making this thread! Would any alums be able to chance me?
Stats: 4.7 GPA, 1600 SAT, 36 ACT, 5’s on 13 tests, 4 on one
ECs and awards: ISEF 2nd in category 2x, 3rd in category 1x, research at MIT for 3 years, winner of an international flute competition, synchronized swimming team captain
I am concerned the 4 will negatively affect me. Also, I don’t have any awards like Siemens national finalist which I hear is almost a prereq for Garcia. Any help would be appreciated!

Your stats are okay, but Garcia is still a shot in the dark. To be honest, I’m a Siemens regional finalist which is a little more impressive than ISEF and I’m still not sure if I’ll get in.

rip

I had a 4.8 gpa, 1600 SAT, 36 ACT, 20 5’s on AP’s and 4 800’s on subject tests and I was a ISEF grand award winner and a Siemens national finalist. I also won the tennis junior australian open last year. I didnt get into garcia when I applied last year…

ok user 946 I think your lying
you did get in

What kind of research opportunities/projects are there?
and is there a maximum or recommended page limit on the application essays?

I heard that for the dental-pulp stem cell group, they preferred students who lived on Long Island since they can return and continue research. Has anyone done that? and how long does the research continue for?

What kind of research opportunities are offered at Garcia, i’m more into bioinformatics, computational biology. Do you pick the department you want to work under?

If you are a rising senior and get into this program, are you allowed to work on an individual research project or do you have to work as part of a team?

@erwang01 There are a lot of different projects there, but they mostly center around polymers. I know people that worked with fibrin, pluronic, gelatin, graphene, and other materials. For more information, you can look at the Garcia yearbooks on the Garcia website.

@Azonymous I don’t there there is really a preference for LI students, project-picking is done on a first-come, first-serve basis. And there is no limit on the application, just write whatever your heart desires :).

@fxc123 There were some programming projects, and I know someone who worked on an Arduino-based project. There are a wide variety of topics (from physics to biology to programming) and I assure you that you will definitely find a project you will like. After two/three weeks of lectures, there is a big session where the possible projects are discussed and chosen. As I said before, you pick what you would like to work on in a first-come, first-serve basis.

@IcyHurricane Ummm you might be able to find an individual project, but it will be veryyyyy hard to. Garcia mainly wants group projects and it’s hard to get your own individual data.

Hi, how much does prior research experience matter? I haven’t really done much legit research, only things like Science Olympiad and AP Bio projects.

Also, are there any projects that are oriented toward math/physics?

Thanks!

What is the acceptance rate for Garcia?

It depends heavily on where you live. Garcia tends to accept far more Long Islanders and New Yorkers than out of states.

If Garcia wants group projects, what will the out of state people do if they want to submit their research to competitions?
