Gates Millenium - 2005-2006

Has anyone ever been a second-round finalist and NOT got the scholarship???? Just wondering...

why are you going to NWU lunknot? Brown PLME is awesome!

it rarely happens, but I guess it does happen tracie

Ok, I called Gates earlier today and got the facts. (Not that I doubt you guys, but it really does seem too good to be true.

Gates covers loans. Period.

Gates sometimes (usually not) covers work-study.

Gates does not cover parent contribution/your own contribution.

Sending it in early does not actually do anything; however, you are encouraged to send out documents ASAP.

gphoenix> sounds good, except remember that all term time employment is not work study.

Staticsoliloquy,

I'm going to Northwestern because I looove Chicago, I loooove the evanston campus, undergrad is 3 yrs, and I automatically get into feinberg school of medicine at NU...in downtown chicago, and I received (amazingly) the best financial aid from them. I dont think I could ask for more. . .so i'm going to take it and run..lol.

I want to die because although our efc looks a lot more than it should (because my mom mistakenly took out her 401k) it is not at all reflective of what we can pay and based on the 2005-2006 income, we would definitely, without a doubt, receive a pell grant. And this scholarship is only for high school seniors, so i can't apply next year....what should i do????? please help pple!

MPiccolo - I didn't assume that all term employment was work study. But if what statics say about Gates giving 3k stipends is true, I doubt any Scholars need to work during the year. Too good to be true, though I will die twice if it is.

sprkl325 - call Gates. They are nice people; explain the circumstances and see if they can help. I would look over your financial data again to see if there were any mistakes or not. When you call, emphasize the situational factors that make this yr different from last yr. Another good resource is the guidance counselor, if he/she is good with fin aid - otherwise, he/she will just tell you what I'm telling you.

Thanks gphoenix. My financial situation changed drastically from 2004 to this year. I really hope they understand and not say: "we go by the FAFSA only and the equations the FAFSA has and the results that FAFSA sends us," like the mean financial aid people at Trinity.

Fafsa absolutely sux. They do not adeqately reflect pple's ability to pay--and colleges certainly do not consider other factors. I am writing them a letter right now. Hope it works.

why is it that everyone has heard except me??!?! i am really starting to freak out... you could probably tell from my earlier post... i mean geesh if i didn't make it tell me already!! i just can't keep waiting for a week after people have already found out... oh well i guess it just means i didn't make it.

They sent all the letters on March 26th....sorry, but you probably didn't make it.

So, just to get things straight...

If we've made it to the second round, we WILL get the scholarship? This is a confirmation stage, so they make sure we weren't lying on the online application?

The letter does make it sound like a verification process. And the woman that called me yesterday said "the sooner you get your materials in, the sooner you'll hear back." She couldn't say that, could she, unless the winners were already selected?

Big question: Can I start celebrating?

Pleeeease someone reply, I'm panicking, lol.

I faxed my letter and 15 pages of supporting materials---to prove that I WOULD have gotten the pell grant. I AM PRAYIN THAT IT WORKSSSSSSSSSSS

Mm, I'm faxing my things today too...your 15 pages were for your financial stuff, right? I was worried for a second that I didn't have enough other stuff...

Yea. This scholarship is the best thing that's ever happened to me!!!!!!!!!!!! ANd if I don't qualify after writing all those essays, I'm going to be devastated!

sprkl) You do realise that everybody gets a letter.

oOo) You can always call them.

I may seem redundant, but do you guys KNOW that the finalists = winners, or is it all second hand info? I don't want to get my hopes up and then be terribly disappointed.

No, Mipiccolo, I got the freakin Finalist letter.

I don't see how finalists can't be winners...because all they need to verify is your financial information. And your grades. Now, if I can settle my Pell Grant issue, I'll be elated!

Plus there are 1000 winners--that's a LOT.
