"Dani, OCA might come in later than UNCF."

That's what I've been hoping. There are so many unknowns with all of this that it's just useless to think about any of it (though that sure as hell doesn't stop me...blaghghgh).

hey Lunknot.. what was your EFC? and what college are you planning on going to?

It covers Self-Help and Unmet need; it doesn't cover EFC (under normal circumstances). That is the impression I got. My FA was great. I dont have unmet need or an EFC.

I'm going to Northwestern University

so, The GMS Scholarship covers everything except minus the school grants? I talked to a Gates representative and he said that it is a full ride. this scholarship will affect my decision as to where i will attend next year. UC San Diego or UC davis. if they cover loans, unmet needs, parent contribution and work study, then i will go to UCSD if not then i will go to UC davis. I have also received other 10,000 dollar scholarships, but how will this gates affect the other scholarship? Please give me some facts or advices. it is time sensetive.

Was the $10,000 from a college or from outside scholarships? If it's from the school, Gates will just make up the difference, i.e. Total Cost of Attendance - school scholarship money/aid.

it was from outside

can i talk to you some other way please

Dani, thank you for answering my question. Can you please elaborate more on what you mean by school aid. does this mean work study or the total financial aid (loans, etc).

Question:

What happens if you are wait listed at a school right now, but end up getting in? Does the scholarship transfer to the other school? Along a similar vein, what happens if you send in information for one school...but decided between then and May 1 that you want to attend a different school?

Thanks!

EKbig30--Hm, I think that if it is outside aid--by that I mean NOT given to you by the college--and you win the gates, you will probably have to rescind that money, because GMS covers everything that your school doesn't, so technically you would not need it (the "outside" scholarship money). Gates also covers work study and loans.

Portlander--I don't know about the waitlisting thing, but I do know that another finalist I know is also trying to decide between schools, and she contacted the office (OCA, and I don't know if anything varies between the organizations) and they told her to send in the info for one school, and she can always change her mind later.

Thank you Dani. If GMS only wants to see the eligibility of pell grant then why do they have to include the grant we receive from the school. What GPA do we maintain to keep the scholarship?

Well, simply put, because the definition of the scholarship is all unmet need. They can't define unmet need without looking at the school's financial package.

There is no GPA, except that you don't fail at the school. Failing as defined by whatever the school says is failing.

I think... not entirely sure... that each of the four organizations within Gates defines unmet need differently. If I were you, portlander, I'd call Gates and double-check...

For the OCA, it covers all unmet financial need, meaning it will pay for sef-help including loans and work study BUT NOT PARENTAL/FAMILY CONTRIBUTION. Still, I feel grateful I don't hafta come out 20k in debt, even if it means I'll be working every break and summer. Oh well, good excuse to get out of the house.

portlander, I can't imagine them not giving you a scholarship just because you change schools, unless they already sent the financial aid package to the first school - and considering Gates is still finalizing packages & preparing checks in August, I doubt that would be a concern; you'd know by then if you were off the WL or not.

To be repetitive, call the Gates office & check. This is probably one of the best scholarships I've heard of, but it is so blatantly ambigious.

BY parent contrubution, the gates millenium does not cover all unmet need, because the fasfa claims that my parent have alot to contribute. This may affect other scholarship that i receive. question; how do you know what organization you are in?

Are you Asian? Black? Native American, Hispanic?

Black or african american

Then you'd be under the UNCF, I believe.

Yea, the differences between FAFSA and parental ability to pay suck. But... it's still better than not having Gates.

From the Gates website, under About us:

"The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the administrator of the GMS initiative. To reach, coordinate, and support the constituent groups, UNCF has subcontracted with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Organization of Chinese Americans"

So if you read carefully, you can find all the organizatoon names.

awesome! thanks Dani and gphoenix

that is true, thank alot. I am now waiting for the official letter. the suspense is killing me.
