cortana, if you meet the other requirements like gpa and income, ofcourse you can ! I would say you’re hispanic to better your chances. I heard 350/1000 scholars were hispanic and 150 were asian/pacific islander.

We should really keep this thread going guys ! How far are you guys in the 8 essays? And have you heard anything about the character count?

awh geez, seriously? 150 asians are chosen? And I bet the most that apply are asians too, go figure. haha great.

And with the paragraph and word count, I say just write enough so that it’s good quality, there isn’t a good or bad amount, as long as its not just one paragraph. 7800 characters is about 2000 words I believe, so you don’t have to write the whole given amount of course.

I’m so unmotivated to do this… I got into college already and I’m kinda just like f this haha
good thing I already have 5 essays written… I just have to pull myself together andcrank out three more

Guys I have a very serious situation, and I don’t know what to do. Ok, so here’s the story.
I asked 2 teachers to be a Nominator and Recommender for my Gate.
Let say the Nominator teacher is A
Recommender teacher is B
A started early, so the Nominator status has been “in progress” for like 3 weeks now
The Recommender status was “in progress” since 2 days ago, and it is summitted today.
I was so happy…until I re-read it and it says “summited by TEACHER AAAAAA.” Whaaat? She was supposed to be my Nominator…apparently she made a huge mistake of doing both N and R. And teacher B apparently did not start the Recommendation Form, or because he couldn’t! Now idk what to do…I won’t see anyone of them, including the counselor till next Wednesday…So I post here to see if anyone has any thoughts on this. Does that mean I’m screwed?

I believe recommender and nominator can be the same person, as long as they know both your academic and ec activities. Try looking it up on the GMS website, it should say.

Does anyone know how many words each essay should be? Most of mine are between 300 and 500. I know the max is 7000 characters, and I just don’t want any of my essays to be too short!

I’m on my 5th essay right now. And I am so brain fried. I have about 4 days left of my winter break, but I really want to get this done, so I can focus on my school work, since the end of the semester is coming up.

And the essays should be at least a page, I think. But it’s all about quality, so if you think you added enough detail and depth in your essay, I think you’re fine.

Most of my essays are about a page long and range from 3,000 to 5,000 characters. I feel like they’re not very long, but from what I’ve read in other areas, it looks like the readers look for quality, not quantity.

Here, this guy’s site might help you out a bit. After looking through some of the essays on there, I felt a little better haha :)

I’ve applied to 4 schools, 2 of which are state schools, and the other 2 are private. The most “prestigious” is Whitman, that I’ve applied to. I actually want to go to the private ones (40k-50k), so this scholarship would be amazing.

Should people going to any of the top schools that will most likely pay everything apply for this considering that they may take away an opportunity for someone less fortunate? I know there is an all expenses paid masters along with undergraduate but it doesn’t seem right.

I say, it’s up to you. If you are sure that your school will pay everything for you, then that defeats the purpose of the whole gates scholarship, because i believe the whole masters +phd has a cap amount, such as they give you 35,000 to get your masters, but doesn’t cover the whole thing, so I think people will eventually have to take out loans.

My personal opinion is that if someone already has a full ride for all 4 years of undergrad, they should give the opportunity to someone else, since there are some people out there that could really use the scholarship, and don’t have the test scores to get a merit scholarship or anything like that. I’ve talked to some people who are questbridge scholars, and they’re applying for this, but I think that’s a little selfish of them since they already are getting full rides. But who am I to tell them not to apply, I mean if you want to, by all means, don’t let anyone stop you.

why is it that when I’m looking at these essays mine look like crap? these are only like a 2000-3000 characters long while mine are about 5000-6000… i feel like i wasted a lot of time writing when I could have written a small and concise quality paper…

Do any of you guys mind explaining what this scholarship is? I’ve heard a lot about it I’m very interested in applying for it when I’m a senior.

@Flapjacklux: This is basically a scholarship that if you win, you are entitled a full-ride through out your masters or Ph.D. in a subject of your choice. Its competitive but it is a great thing to apply for.

@ flapjacklux, there are some requirements, such as being non white, and having a moderately low income, and a 3.3 GPA, but don’t forget, if you are a top flight student, many top schools will give alot of financial aid so think about which schools you may want to apply to when you are a senior
