**GATES MILLENNIUM 2016****

I believe she needs to register for the other category. You may need to call Gates to straighten it out. She can still work on the appropriate questions as they are out there so she doesn’t lose time!

Hello,

Im applying for the gates scholarship but i added two teachers to my reccomender form
One teacher is my supervisor for my community service project but he never had me as a student and the other teacher has had me as a student so she can vouch for me academically. Is it a problem to have two teachers as recs?

Also i noticed that something is wrong with the reccomendation section on my landing page. I was able to add reccomenders and nominators but now that option doesnt exist and the person i put as my nominator is not there anymore. Has anyone experienced this?

Gates Scholar 2013 here.

@sunnystategator hey there! I know I am late but I really hope that you were able to stay motivated and are still working on the application. I will be the first to tell you to NOT WORRY ABOUT ANYONE ELSE EXCEPT YOURSELF. I went to a ‘poor’ high school in Brooklyn that lacked so much in contrast to some of the better ones. I graduated valedictorian and had a 3.6 unweighted avg, but overall I worried that this did not mean anything. However, I still obtained the scholarship. My advice is to just pour your heart out in the essays and really get them to get to know you. I had a ton of errors in my essays, yet I was one of the two Brooklyn students to get the scholarship. I really do believe that GMSP does not compare applications, or they group the applicants by high school type (hint: since they ask for the high school profile in the app). Good luck!

@chellosaurus I am unsure how the app is now but you should only have 1 recommender and one nominator. Double check with GMS though.

@chellosaurus The Gates folks recently changed the procedure for how the Nominator and Recommender submit their forms. Now, the Nominator and Recommender each have to create their own accounts, enter your Gates ID number, fill out their forms, and that will link their forms to your application. You, the student can no longer send them an invite via the online system. However, your own page should display one of each. Your application will be considered incomplete if you have two from one category and none from the other category. Any issues, call Gates customer service immediately.

Hello everyone! I’m a little late to the party (I only just noticed that there is, in fact, a GMSP thread on CC) but I’m here and I wish all of us the best of luck! I have a question. So I took some college/dual enrollment classes at a Community College. Do I add those to my Academic Record? Also, what exactly do they mean when they ask if a class is Honors Level? Do they just mean a class is an Honors class, or do they mean that a class is anything above a regular level class (so Honors, AP, IB, etc)?

@ThatPeprika Honors does indeed mean anything above a regular-level class, including dual enrollment classes since they also count towards your high school diploma. I’m sure you have noticed that there is also a “bubble” to check showing that you have taken college classes but are currently in high school. Check that bubble. If you are looking for prompt last-minute advice about the GMSP, there is an excellent Facebook group site you can join. Your request to join will be granted quickly. https://www.facebook.com/groups/GMSApplication/

I contacted gms and the person i spoke to said it(s fine to have more than one for both categories

@northernAZ Thanks! Also, are you referring to the “I have not graduated from high school nor completed the requirements for a GED diploma by June 2016, but I have been admitted to a collegiate institution” button in the Education tab?

@northernAZ Also, thanks for telling me about the Facebook group, but I don’t have a Facebook account (it’s not really my thing haha). But thanks anyway! I have another question though. When they ask about your family size, do they mean family living in your household (I know household tends be a common question), or are they asking how many people in your immediately family, so parents and sibling(s) and such?
Edit: Whoops, sorry! I see the thing you were talking about! Somehow, even though I actually answered that question, I still forgot about even seeing it haha. But yeah, I had already selected the Dual Enrollment option, but thanks for reminding me! (this is what happens when one starts an application early, fills it out, then comes back to it much much later)

For family size, I’d suggest using the definition of “family members” that the FAFSA uses, since this question is related to financial aid. Household size is a different concept, especially when it comes to listing “family income” for Federal Aid purposes. The question about the dual enrollment “bubble” was actually from a different scholarship application. I apologize for the confusion.

Finally submitted all three forms

Do you have to put the Gross Annual Income of both parents or just one?

@RahWins I put the income for both my parents.

Since the essay word limits are all 1000, should I try to write that much? Like for the what subjects have you succeeded in, I just don’t understand how you can even come close to writing a thousand words.

@JungleJim4232 I actually did because I used multiple examples! Just make sure you explain things thoroughly. Don’t write a lot just to stretch out your essay.

Does the scholarship require you to post your GPA as of the beginning of your senior year, or your GPA as of the end of the first semester of your senior year? Thanks in advance

@JessieAlex2 You put in your current cumulative GPA, so if your first semester ended in December, make sure you also add in the first semester of your senior year GPA into your cumulative GPA. However if your first semester doesn’t end until the end of January like mines does, then report your cumulative GPA of 9-11th.

im new to this thread hello! i know the deadline is literally in two days but i just wanted to wish everyone good luck! :)>-

Hi guys, if I don’t qualify for a Pell Grant, can I still apply for Gates? Please give me an honest answer, and not just discourage me to better your chances haha. I’m almost done with my essays and my recommender is finishing up his part. I know Pell Grant eligibility is an eligibility requirement for the scholarship, but is there any possible chance that they can still consider me?
