Gates Millennium Scholarship 2013-2014

Emjkitty…YES accept the work study. Gates will pay your work study…essentially you will get a check each semester from gates to cover your WS

@Mananausunwajan, I think this also varies by institution. My son accepted all aid provided by the institution, but after being awarded the GMS, a new financial aid award was received no longer listing work study or subsidized loan options. He is now only eligible for unsubsidized loans through his school. He got to keep all the merit scholarships and grants though.

I am a GMS scholar from Frisco, TX. Trying to check how it works for kids whose parents are seperated. The 7 year med program i got into in a private institution. The award letter is based of the contribution from both parents instead of the parent with whom i reside. Anyone know how that will work.

Can someone please explain to me how work study works with gates? Do I actually have to work?

For all who have questions as to how the financial aid will work with the Gates Scholarship: it would be best to contact your university’s Financial Aid department. Only they can tell you how it will work as it differs from university to university. If you have any further questions after that, I would recommend calling the Gates Scholarship number. I hope this helps :wink:

Just a little more information about what my Son is receiving. Wrapping up his 1st year at Davis Gates has paid a total of $9234.00 in funds. He did have an overage until this last quarter. What was happening was Davis was awarding him his financial aid and then Gates was giving him $3078.00. This resulted in an overage of $1503.00 per quarter for 2 quarters. My son thought he hit the jackpot. His mind frame was “Wow I do not have a job and every year I can get $4509.00 put in my bank account and have a pretty active social life”. That was until this quarter and Davis lowered his financial aid award and he had to pay back $404.00 of the overage. He now understands that he will not get any refunds and he needs to get a part time job if he wants to be active in his frat.

So to reiterate, this is not a scholarship that allows you to sit on your duff and not pursue opportunities to become employed.

@GA2012MOM‌ or @GinaRivera will Gates send the check to US or the UNIVERSITY?

Gates sends the check to your school, then you get a check from your bursars office for whatever is due you, which in my daughters case was work study money each semester. I don’t know how it is handled if you live off campus for example, I would “guess” that living expense money would be disbursed to you each semester as well. Definitely call your FA office to find out for sure.

At this time my Son lives on campus and he never receives a check. Gates mails the check to Davis and if there is any overage it is deposited into his bank account.

What stats do you need to be competitive for this scholarship? Also how poor do you have to be to qualify?

@ooohcollege‌
GPA-wise, you probably want the best that you can achieve.
Test scores don’t really matter - a friend of mine got this scholarship with an SAT of slightly over 1500.
Brilliant kid, though. President of one club, tons of awards at the local level, and other leadership positions in other clubs.

@GinaRivera‌
There are no reasons Bill Gates or this scholarship should pay for things like frat expenses. However, I do know of a student whose airfare costs are being covered by this scholarship. Then again, he’s attending a school that already meets full need (Notre Dame), so he didn’t need much money from the scholarship to begin with.

Is there a salary cap to be eligible for this award?

@Fredjan Does Gates usually pay for the transportation of students with full rides? I think a lot of people are interested in that aspect. I need to call them, but I’m waiting for my institution to send me my enrollment package.

@ooohcollege‌ SAT scores don’t matter. They actually never ask for them. In regards to GPA, you should just make sure yours is as high above the minimum (I think it’s a 3.3) as possible and that your extracurricular and essay show how amazing of a person you are. You dont have to be a perfect person with a 4.0, you just have to show that you’re driven, able to overcome adversity, and worthy of them investing their money into. Concerning how “poor” you have to be, just make sure you qualify for the Pell grant. I hope this helps!

Hey everyone. I’m a rising Senior and a hopeful GMS Scholar. I have started on my essays. I want to see if anyon will let me take a look at their essays and get a better feel for great essays. If you don’t mind let me know, thanks! Email: hopefulGMS23@gmail.com

@davidh23‌ I’ll take a look at them…It has to be after June 11th though, haha. Send me a message with your email and short bio please. :-)

So for those who recieved the GMS scholarship, after you completed the request funding form is there another step I have to do like contact my institution or send another form?

@davidh23I’m a 2014 Gates Scholar and I really don’t think you should read several essays of previous scholars. would recommend writing your pouring heart into them before another essay that may be spectacular, out the box, set these expectations for yourself adds pressure on possibly negative impact essays. didn’t have others edit my either content rather than grammar. Just stay true to if had struggles in life, dont make focus point. Sure, mention them, but then sure end negatively. How did it change better? End with that. oh! Another thing, keep mind most scholarships are not just investing so can finish school, is school better future younger generations. Excuse typos. I’m typing via Android

@MaryTiana Welcome!! :-h It’s nice to meet a new member of our GMSP2014 family! What are your ethnicity, college, major, and career goals? :D

Is anyone noticing on the GMS scholar site a delay in document showing up? My high school sent my final transcript on June 16, and it still hasn’t posted to my documents. I contacted the GMS Office and they say it was received they are just delayed updating accounts. Just curious???

@Brimech1‌ I have no idea, my high school doesn’t do theirs until July, so I’ll have mine in late for GMS and for my university. :((
