Can students apply for the Gates Millenium Scholarship individually or does someone have to nominate you? If so, can you ask a teacher to be a nominator and recommender?

Thank you!

Thank you!

You can ask teachers to be those. If I remember correctly, D registered on line, and then she had to give her two teachers some pertinent info such as full name, SS#, and then the teachers used that info to log into her account and fill out their forms.

Can a nominator be a recommender?

Thank you, GA2012MOM!

No, they need to be different. Go ahead and register yourself and it should give you more info.

Yes, they both can be the same, just make sure that you choose someone who knows you pretty well.

Wait, does one need to have a nominator or can one nomintate oneself. Also do they need to have teacher recommendations?
Please someone respond, its urgent!!!

@Olive_Tree: Yes, your nominator can also serve as your recommender, but I’d suggest asking two separate individuals who know you well to serve as nominator and recommender. It’ll give the GMS folks a chance to see you from two supporting perspectives instead of just one.

@CSUtoEU: Your nominator is an individual who can support you through the application process. Essentially, it’s someone who can write your recommendation but also agrees to work with you through the scholarship application should you need their help. This can be a teacher, coach, counselor, or someone who can speak to your academic achievement, leadership potential, and community service–they just can’t be a family member.

You do not need to wait for them to nominate you. You can simply ask them to be your nominator. You will also need a recommender who can speak to the same qualities as above. You can basically look at it as two recommendations.
