Gay at UChicago

Hey guys! I got into UChicago, Penn, and Cornell and am trying to make a decision. Can anyone tell me something about the gay community at any of these schools? More specifically, can you tell me about the lesbian communities and dating.

Unfortunately, it seems like none of the current students who post regularly in this forum has first-hand knowledge about being a gay woman at the University of Chicago. (And I couldn’t possibly fail that test more completely.) In the past, however, there were two gay female students who were regular posters, sharp observers of social life (and not just in the lesbian community), and really honest and forthcoming in their posts. Both really good writers, too, and with lots of great stuff to say about many topics that had nothing to do with being gay women.

So if no one steps up to answer your question, and you don’t mind information that’s a few years old (I think they were both AB '10) but probably still reasonably true, use the search function to look for posts by corranged and unalove.

What intrigues me is how ebcmfeyn can possibly know that they got into UChicago, Penn, and Cornell. Just doesn’t make sense. No combination of SCEA, EA, ED, or RD makes it possible. Maybe I’m just thick-headed.

Could be an athlete - my DD had early writes because of that.

Yes, EA at U of C and early writes to the other two make sense. You don’t have to be an athlete to get an early write, either. This does not have the flavor of a ■■■■■… it is a legitimate question.

ebcmfeyn, although I am certainly hoping we’ll have some students who are able to chime in on the social side (and I’d encourage you to join in and ask this question on the Admitted Students’ Facebook group if you haven’t already since I know more current students are around to answer there, or to email it to psac@uchicago.edu, where one of our current students will be sure to answer), definitely check out some of the information and resources available through our Office of LGBTQ student life-- they have more formal programming rather than information about informal social interactions and dating life on campus, but I think are definitely a great example of the opportunities available to LGBTQ students on campus and how open and welcoming our campus is to students of any identification.
Hi! I’m a lesbian current student at UChicago. The scene here is great, much better than many other schools! Unlike the stereotypical queer event which is most gay men and one or two queer girls, here you actually get a decent mix. Queers and Associates, the gay straight alliance, often has many girls at it and is a very nice environment, the people in charge of it also organize movie nights, a broomball team (called Dykes on Ice although of course there are also plenty of queer men who particpate in it) parties and invite everyone to it. Quorum is a seperate group meant just for queer girls, there they discuss queer women issues and also just hang out. You can also meet queer girls outside of these meetings if they aren’t your thing. Dating definitely happens, there are lesbian couples and you do seem them about on campus, and no one else seems to react weirdly to it, plus there are several couples in Quorum. Hook ups also happen, so whatever you are looking for you will be able to find it.
Also, the rest of the school’s attidue to LGBTQ people is amazing. No one cares and everyone is very supportive. I know someone whose HUM class actually included an article about a Mexican-American Lesbian and how all her different identities intersect.

somewhat related, I guess: what’s the activism scene here in general? mostly in terms of LGBTQ/feminist stuff, I guess. are there women’s rights clubs etc?

onemoreparent, I found out through likely letters, but now I am officially in. Thanks for all the help, everyone. I really appreciate it.
