I am a junior in high school and I am starting to get ready to apply to colleges. I am an openly gay male and I am seeking a college near a big city (Los Angeles) because big cities tend to have larger gay communities. I was wondering what the gay community was like at Chapman. Is there a big or small gay population at the university? Are students open-minded and accepting of other gay students? Also, I was wondering how far away the city of Los Angeles is and how far nearby beaches were? Do many students go into the city or to beaches that often? If anyone want to reply to my post that would be great! Thanks!

There is also an organization (LGBT), and the link to look that up. [Chapman University OrgSync](http://chapman.orgsync.com/)

The city of L. A. is about an hour drive away depending on traffic. The nearby Newport Beach is about a 15 minutes drive. As for activities for students in general, it depends on the individual, some people like the beaches and some like the city.

I don’t know about Chapman but I know Pepperdine University in Malibu as a fairly large gay population.

Chapman seems to be a bit more conservative so personally I don’t think they would be as welcoming as other more liberal colleges…

Hans, I respectfully disagree. Although there is a chapel at Chapman, it is not conservative and has very little religious affiliations.

Google “chapman undie run.” Yeah, I don’t think its very conservative.

TC: Chapman has a lot of very open-minded and creative individuals who won’t think twice if you’re gay or not. Even though I don’t know the stats on the gay population, I can safely say the students there are very friendly and open to others and you won’t have a problem.

Chapman sells itself as welcoming to diversity…blah…blah…but what they say is very different from the actual culture of the university. This is how Chapman Univ really is:

Anyone has questions about Chapman’s diversity should read the Pink Panther article dating back to 1999 in regards to GLBA’s Efforts Motivate Campus Community.
I feel that Chapman is very accepting of the LGBT crowd. I know several people who are openly gay (open to the point where they would bring it up in class discussion, their video projects reflected this, etc) and I never heard of them running into any issues. Also, I don’t know if you are interested in Greek life, but as an example, one of the larger Fraternities on campus, Delta Tau Delta (also winner of fraternity of the year) has several openly gay members.
