Gay Friendly at Cal

How accepting is the student population of gay people?
Are there many gay people on campus that you know?
Any negative stigma towards gay people?
...and anything else you can think of!

I heard that there's themed housing specifically for LGBT students, so that could be a great place to make friends and start off at Cal.

There is, and, essentially, a "LGBT ect" co-op (Oscar Wilde). Most people are accepting, I know gay students (some undergrad, some grad, some professional) and professors.

There are no worries at Cal about being gay, aside from having a very lively gay community, (I know this is going to be un-PC, but the hell with that crap.) with gays ranging from out-and-out and proud to pretty quiet and everything in between, as well as Berkeley/SF Bay Area being one of the most liberal areas in the country regarding homosexuality. Almost every student is pretty accepting, course, you have a few bigots, but they keep pretty quiet knowing they are wretchedly outnumbered.

Yuo're not going to find a more tolerant campus or urban community out there...

The Cal undergrads are, for the most part, accepting of gay students. The Cal Queer and Asian Group tables on Sproul pretty often and I've never seen any shouting matches or anything of that such against those students.

Some of my closest friends here at Cal are gay.

In terms of "negative stigma", there will be students who were raised to have different values and thus view gay students differently. However, they are, as andrew said, outnumbered.

Cal has a Queer Resource Center for its students. There was also a Queer Dance this year, and other events.

I think its a more accurate generalization to say that most don't care.

I live in conservative SoCal, and anytime Berkeley is brought up, it's known as the "communist faggot center." Ugh.

^^^Hey, I'm offended by that. My friends and I are all socialist faggots!

That explains a lot of your posts.

rimshot

There IS some truth to the stereotype of UCB as the University of Communist Bisexuals.

"Are there many gay people on campus that you know?"
I've never met more gay people in my life until I came to Cal.

"Any negative stigma towards gay people?"
Haven't seen any incidents of this yet.

Perhaps there are a lot of communist bisexuals relative to say, LA, but to say that it is the UNIVERSITY of that implies wide-spread popularity. How wide spread and popular do you really think it is on campus? I'd say not very, on the whole.

WELCOME to the Hidden History of the Berkeley Campus, a project of the Gay Bears! Collection in The University Archives. This site gathers together information about the history of sexual minorities at Cal -- students, faculty, staff and visitors. It is designed as a gateway for further exploration into one aspect of the long and fascinating story of the University of California, Berkeley. http://sunsite3.berkeley.edu/gaybears/

I don't personally know anyone that is gay ( or at least openly gay), but I don't think I would mind or be wierded out by it (unless I found out my roommate was gay and wanted to do stuff)
