I'm coming this fall as a freshman, and as the title of the thread suggests, I'm a gay male.

I look/dress/sound/act as if I'm 100% straight, and any person on the street would never know that I'm gay. It's 100% un-noticeable.

However, it's not a secret anymore and people find about about it. In my high school, it's frankly "not okay to be gay" and I'm hoping that at Mizzou people will be more accepting of it?

Does anyone know how students here tend to act towards gay people? And is Columbia a town where it's generally an okay thing?

-thanks.

Coming from a high school environment like that, I can understand why you would be nervous. But my impression as a parent, based on the attitudes of my own son and his friends, is that it will be perfectly okay.

I’m not gay and I don’t go to the school yet, but from what I noticed everyone there was REALLY nice. I agree with the person above me that you should be fine.

My D’s best friend is a gay. As I know he doesn’t have any problem to be open about it among classmates. She goes with him to frat parties; and it’s also ok.

In high schools in Missouri it’s fine, but it’s not “accepting”. Not everyone at MU will be accepting, but there are plenty of people who will be. Columbia is probably the most liberal place in Missouri, and the state is often a swing state in elections.

Columbia is maybe one of the most liberal places in the country.

You will be fine.
