hey guys, so i know there are probably lots of other threads about this, but i thought i'd just make a new one to see if anything's changed. i'm interested in duke, but i am also gay. i have heard things about duke, and when i say i am interested in applying to duke, people often scoff at me and tell me that i will not fit in there. i am wondering if this is just a misconception-- is duke more accepting of lgbtq than they appear to be?

it's a beautiful school with wonderful programs (i'd apply for the creative writing program or the econ program), so i hope it is just a derogatory misconception. thanks in advance guys! :)

i think you’ll find Duke to be much more LGBTQ-accepting than people (outsiders, usually) would have you believe - especially in recent years. This blog and this article explain what I mean better than I could:

Quick question-- does being LGBT help with admissions at Duke (if you make it obvious in terms of EC’s or if you write about it for your essay)? I don’t know if many (or anybody) would know the answer to that, but any enlightenment would help, haha.

It shouldn’t have any effect. There have been a few articles about a few schools actively seeking LGBT diversity, but it’s not really a common practice. If it adds to your application by conveying a leadership position or overcoming hardships, then it will be a positive (as would anything else). But, it and of itself, will have no effect whatsoever. They obviously wouldn’t know unless you bring it up. I’d mention leadership/initiative in the context of LGBT causes; then it will certainly help your application. Otherwise, it seems unnecessary to talk about it unless it fits in well with your essay topic.
