I have looked up some information regarding the LGBT life at the University of Michigan, and I hadn’t really come across a lot of information.
I know the institution itself is “gay friendly” and was ranked in the top 25 LGBT-friendly schools; however, I was wondering how active the gay “scene” was at U-M and in Ann Arbor in general - also, in regards to Greek life and possibly joining a fraternity as a gay student.
For a medium-size college town, Ann Arbor has a fairly large and active gay “scene”. There are plenty of gay students, and there are several bars that cater specifically to the LGBT community on certain nights (and most of those become 18+ on those nights). I’ll let you research those on your own. That being said, don’t expect the scene to compare to that of a large city.
I can’t really speak for how tight-knit the undergraduate gay community is at Michigan because I only came out at the end of my senior year, but at least at the law school, all of the gays are very close. There is a large group of us that hang out regularly, and I imagine you could find similar groups as an undergraduate.
Your last question is a little trickier. There are certainly gay students in Greek life. I was one of them. But as I said, I didn’t come out until the end of my senior year. My fraternity brothers took it extremely well and I had absolutely no problems, but even so, there is some pretty blatant homophobia that exists. Your experience will vary greatly from fraternity to fraternity I think. And as you can imagine, the more “out there” you are, the more difficult it would probably be. It’s unfortunate, but it’s reality. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.
