Hey guys! I'm a junior in high school right now and I'm sort of interested in pursuing Business and Creative Writing at Vanderbilt, but I have heard that there is a very low tolerance for lgbt. I know that some element of this is true, but I was basically wondering... is the gay life really as bad as some people say?

Also is there anybody I could talk to specifically about the school's lgbt life that might know about it first-hand? If there isn't much acceptance on the campus and in Tennessee, I don't really want to become more invested in pursuing the school, even though its programs coordinate well with my interests.

The people at the KC Potter Center (the LGBTQI office) are extremely nice. The office was actually just opened a few years back (two or three? don’t quote me on it) and is a nice place. They have lunches on Tuesdays I believe, where you pack a lunch and can go there to hang out with other people. Everyone’s accepting and open minded. As for Vanderbilt as a whole, I can’t speak about much. I have a few gay friends and in the end it’s mostly about them choosing friends with accepting people. There’s of course some students who can’t deal with it, but it’s not that hard to just not be friends with them. The good thing about college is that there are a lot of people to choose friends from. Just choose good ones =D. And yeah, the KC Potter center isn’t open during break. They’ll probably reply once school starts back up on the 9th.

As long as you pick your friends well, you’ll be fine. As a student at Vandy, I can say I don’t see any bullying of anyone really. I know that I personally don’t have any prejudices towards LBGT and my friends don’t either.
