hi everyone. I’m pretty new to college confidential, so I’m not sure if I’m doing this right or not. I’ve been admitted under early action and I consider Villanova to be a top choice. However, before I make a choice, I wanted to know what the gay life was like on campus. Is it vibrant and active?
I’m a current senior and although I’m not gay, I do have a few friends here who are. I’ll do my best to give you some info. We do have a Gay Straight Coalition and I think you would benefit from getting in touch with one of the students leaders in that organization (just go the the nova gsa website and email one of the leaders letting them know that you would like to ask them a few questions). Being a suburban school, we don’t really have gay bars or anything like that around campus. However we are very close to Philadelphia and there is a very vibrant gay community in Washington Square West. As far as on-campus, I’m not exactly sure what the culture is like, which is why I would recommend reaching out to GSA to get a better perspective.
Congrats on you acceptance and good luck with your decision!
I actually emailed Villanova’s GSC a few weeks ago and got a very nice reply. It seems like Nova has a small, but tight-knit and friendly gay/lesbian population. Villanova is my top choice right now, I’m just waiting for financial aid- so, just to let you know, you definitely won’t be the only gay freshman at Villanova next year if you do decide to go. Best of luck regardless! (from another nervous HS senior)
Vibrant and active…no. Accepted…yes. I don’t think people really care what anyone else is into anymore.
Virtually non-existent; although you won’t face any type of open or blatant discrimination- don’t expect everyone to accept you with open arms as most students here come from conservative backgrounds. If it is a big part of your life get accustomed to going out at Haverford or Penn where such lifestyles are more common, otherwise Villanova may not be the best option.
