Hello Everyone, I just got accepted into Santa Clara University and its a catholic school.
It is not my first choice but I may end up going here anyways. The problem is, I'm gay. I do not know if my presence will be welcomed here. Does anyone know the population of the gay community at this school? Does it even have a gay community?

Congrats on your acceptance! I hate that you have to even worry about that at such an exciting time in your life, but San Francisco is nearby and the gay community is really prominent there…hth

SCU has 3 or 4 gay-alliance groups on campus. They seem active but not a huge presence on campus.

GLBT issues are well integrated into the curriculum, many classes are offered that focus on the issue directly (ie: English literature courses on Gay and Lesbian Literature) or a fundamental aspect integrated into the coursework as part of either social justice component or diversity component.

The school is Catholic–but it is Jesuit. The Jesuits are like the liberal branch of the Catholic spectrum.

As for a very “in your face/activist” gay community at SCU–not really as far as I can see. SCU students are a bit more laid back in general. SCU is extremely friendly and cheerful and welcoming and my take has been that sexual orientation isn’t really a big issue. It is California and it just isn’t that big of a deal here.

Will you be welcomed? Absolutely. Like I said above, the students at SCU are for the most part fairly liberal and this won’t even phase them. Are their clubs? Definitely, yes.

mmm.okay, thank you all. My fears have been subsided a nit. Now I move on to the money issue. I will see who gives me a better financial aid package. Thank you all so much:D
