How is Georgetown in terms of acceptance of its gay students? And would you say the students are accepting as well as the school itself?

well, Georgetown is a Jesuit university, which means it’s Catholic. I’ve heard that Catholicism doesn’t dominate the school like some other religiously affiliated colleges, but the fact Georgetown does consider itself Catholic still carries some weight. I mean, I don’t think they would outright deny you in the admissions process considering how PC everything is these days, but they’re probably not looking to add gay students for extra diversity. I am not gay, but you can expect a small gay population.

Obviously the school is associated with the Catholic Church which does not believe in gay or homosexual relationships. However, the school itself does not look down on gay students, nor do the students themselves. Actually, I believe that less than 40% of the student body is actually Catholic (don’t quote me. it might even be less!). So yes, they are very accepting of gay students. They have a very prominent gay student association who are very welcome on campus.

I don’t know about the school, but from what I’ve heard about the students, I would assume they are very open to gay students. The student population is overwhelmingly liberal (Young Democrats is the biggest club on campus), so in terms of its students–compared to other catholic universities, and even non-catholic universities–I think Georgetown’s more accepting than most.

Gay groups are very prominent on campus, to a shocking extent for a Catholic school. Georgetown also recently opened an LGBT resource center and there are really quite a lot of gay people around who tend to be quite activist.

Soph701, you certainly don’t know about the school. The College Democrats are not the largest group on campus, and Georgetown is more conservative than a typical college campus (about 60/40 or 65/35 Dems to Republicans). HOWEVER, Georgetown is an extremely welcoming place and most people are supportive of GLBTQ issues.

oh well my mistake! my friend who is a freshman seemed to have a different opinion and is the one who said Dems were the biggest group. I guess he is misinformed.
