Hey guys, I was accepted to Vandy and I know this school has it all.
It packs a powerful punch and for anyone to be accepted to this school obviously has enormous talent. Grats!

But, what I was wondering if there is a decent gay student body on campus.
Any knowledge you have will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

lol you applied ED without looking into that?

Er… I’ve actually heard Vanderbilt is not the most accommodating for gay people. However, this is just from what I’ve heard, not sure if it’s true or not.

Vanderbilt recently got a chapter of Delta Lambda Phi

Yea I dont know either. But i guess what he is asking is if there are like NYU type kids on campus? or what is the campus feel of students

My son is largely liberal on most issues and he has close friends who are both straight and gay at Vandy. He turned down admission to a couple of wonderful liberal arts colleges where more liberal students might be thought to cluster in order to accept his open door to Vandy.

I don’t think anyone would say that Vandy has the most gay friendly student body in a stand out way at the top of the list in the USA but you need to understand the context of Vandy undergrad and if you enroll, be part of the bigger picture. Vandy publishes a liberal newspaper and a conservative paper (check out on insidevandy.com) You should read those papers to get a feeling for the diversity that is Vanderbilt. Son decided that he would benefit from a school where there is actual division in thinking politically. But Son was most intrigued with the expansiveness of getting to have many small classes but studying on the same campus where there are excellent grad schools of Div, Law and Medicine and Business among other tracks. There are advantages to attending a school of 6000 in a decent sized city…lots of excellent speakers and cultural events all the time.

He is out and about in larger Nashville and you may be surprised at how the arts are supercharged in Nashville and how many creative people are around all the time. In other words, Vanderbilt has an unusually positive and fluid town gown relationship. Its certainly not NYC but it is a very vibrant third coast city.

He decided to be himself and to make his own way and he is very pleased with his decision and very happy with his friends and teachers.
congrats on your admission to Vandy…if you accept and enroll, simply…bring yourself. You are who they admitted to campus. Be open hearted and make your own way there.

My daughter is another Vandy undergraduate who has found her own niche within the school and the town. She is deeply involved in several groups on campus that are of interest to her, and she has found friends within these groups. Because she is very interested in the music industry, she has met many people outside of Vandy … Belmont students, local artists and promoters, and people who work in the music business. She has certainly not been part of what many seem to consider typical Vandy social life (no sorority rush, no fraternity parties, no drunken trips to town). She is very comfortable with her place at Vandy. Academically, she couldn’t be more pleased. She likes the AXLE requirements, feeling that they allow an opportunity to explore some very interesting areas. She has enjoyed her classes, and she has gotten to know some of her professors quite well (including one she seems to bump into often at concerts). She did research for a prof this summer, and it paid well enough to cover her LSAT prep course and summer living expenses. She spent a semester abroad, which was incredible. All in all, she has taken advantage of the many opportunities afforded by the school and the community.

I think that students who are strong in their sense of self will find a place, no matter what it is that separates them from the “typical” student at Vandy. However, it is important to decide for yourself whether or not the school fits. A visit is a great idea, if you have not yet been on campus.
