Since you are in NJ, I would check out both TCNJ (The College of New Jersey) and Ramapo College. Both of these schools are much smaller than Rutgers. I know Ramapo has majors/minors in Biology, Environmental Science, and Environomental Studies. They also give out numerous merit scholarships for freshmen.

Thanks again everyone for the great suggestions. S2 will add U Del to his list, I think. TCNJ has become quite competitive and is more of a match than a safety, and in this financial climate I think many top students will be heading there because of their great merit aid, (while it lasts).
I will ask him to consider Allegheny, Scranton and some SUNY’s.
Thank God he’s my last; my older 2 were a walk in the park compared to S2, but I didn’t realize it at the time.

Take a look at Goucher. It would be a true safety for your son, and he would likely get significant merit money to boot. It’s a very “green” campus with an activist student body and an emphasis upon global/international education.
They have Bio major and an interdisciplinary Environmental Studies minor.

Second the look at Goucher. Near a nice part of Baltimore with another college, Towson, nearby.

I’m not sure about the environ bio program at American, but it has similar attributes described in the above post for Goucher, and definitely an activist student body. Check out the post K Washington in the American U alpha list forum.

It would be if you were from Delaware, but it is getting more competitive. I know students from NJ from my son’s class who were excellent students, and people were surprised that they were denied admission. Without knowing more of your son’s statistics, I would say that it is a match. That said, it is a medium-sized campus, and maybe your son would like it.

I know you said he did not like colleges in the “middle of nowhere” but if you can get him to look at St. Mary’s of Maryland for its environmental program he might decide to take a chance. If you have a car, you can get to the last Metro station pretty easily and from there get into the DC metro area.

Wheaton in Massachusetts like Goucher is looking for more male students and gives them a significant boost in admissions. Good bio, D3 sports, cross registration with Brown whose environmental offerings are excellent.
