GE class: Art of Listening

On another thread, someone mentioned that Art of Listening was an easy class for anyone who has a good background in music. So, for anyone who's taken it before, I have some questions...

When I saw it on the registrar's site, there were at least two hundred people taking it at the same time! How can music be taught with so many people?

Also, its description says that there is 11 hours of outside work involved. Does that mean we have to do "outside work" 11 hours a WEEK? What is "outside work"?

Is that If I have a solid background in music theory, the basics of music history, several years of piano, but horrible aural skills, is it recommended for me take this class?

i took it fall quarter this year and there were 500 (not kidding) people enrolled in the class. it really isn't music that's being taught, the professor just lectures on biographies of composers, dates, names of different styles, names of diff instruments, etc.

this class is known as a BS class--so basically you really don't need ANY music background to take it. no knowledge of music theory is required, and knowing it won't help you because that's not what the class covers. there were many athlete/slacker types in the class. really, if you actually want to learn any music information of value, this class is more or less useless.

the "outside study" that's required--it's 10 hours of outside work the whole quarter (and that's a generous estimate, most people probably spent less). the work consists of listening to a bunch of musical selections before the exams. for the exam, he will play the music on the lecture hall speakers and ask you identify which piece it is. THIS IS RIDICULOUSLY EASY. overall, this class is great if you're looking get some easy units, but if you actually have an interest in music and want to learn something, this isnt the class for it.

Wow, thanks.

Damn, I was so enthusiastic about it too.

Are any of the GE music history classes any good?

im in ethnomu 20A....it's kinda tough but youll get to see a lot of cool stuff cause practically every lecture we have guest lecturers and performers. the tests are hard though and the class doesnt really prepare u for those. and art of listening is an athlete class (= bs class)

haha...I'm taking the class right now. The class concists of 2 hours of lectures 2X a week. 1 hour lecture and 1 hour listening to performances. A lot of people don't even attend class ...so =/.

There are (2) 3-5pg essays
3 1pg essays
and 1 in class concert report essay

All relatively easy. The test is kinda hard though, especially the listening section. It's alright though. Nothing too challenging.

What GE does this class count for?

Foundations of the Arts and Humanities: Visual and Performing Arts Analysis and Practice

"
