GE classes above the 100 level as a freshman?

Hello,

I was putting together a potential schedule for first semester freshman year, and most of the GE courses I’m interested in are above the 100 level (such as HIST 275, SLL 345, ANTH 202, ANTH 314, HIST 324). My understanding is that under normal circumstances (such as within your major), you primarily take 200 level classes as a sophomore and 300 level classes as a junior. However, since these are GE classes (and therefore there are no prerequisite classes and I don’t plan on taking all the 100 and 200 level courses leading up to that class), does this rule still apply? Can I/will they even let me schedule 200 or 300 level courses as a freshman, or should I wait until I am a sophomore or a junior?

Thanks!

When I was a sophomore transfer, I took a level 200 GE my first semester. They didn’t seem to have any complaints/prevent me from registering. I’ve even seen 400-level GEs. These higher-level GEs aren’t exactly like most of the other high level courses with pre-reqs; a lot of GE courses are curved a bit more generously and don’t go as in-depth as higher-level course typically would. They assume you basically have no prior knowledge of what is being taught and will tell you everything you need to know (although the success of some professors to actually accomplish that varies).

@zettasyntax Thanks for your response:)
