I just received a letter saying that I was chosen as a finalist for GEAR and that I must attend the interviewing event. How competitive is it to get into this program? How many students are selected?

My son also received a postcard telling him he is a finalist. I have the same question as another post noted–how many finalists are there and how many students are actually chosen for the program??

There are actually quite a few finalists for the GEAR program - I believe the approximate number is 90, of which there is no pre-determined number of students that may be accepted into the program. The program is relatively new and the School of Engineering is looking to grow, so the number of students accepted into the program will depend on a number of discussions that take place before, during, and after the GEAR interviewing event.

…and I forgot, Congrats on being named a finalist!

Thank you! My child is excited to attend the GEAR event in March. Is it customary for the finalists to receive their UR acceptance letters PRIOR to this event?

It is not customary, though not out of the question either. I’ll see if I can get you a more specific response though.
