GED and transfering AA

In high school I performed extremely well. I carried a 3.6 and maintained honors and AP classes. But the week before junior year, my mother passed away of cancer. I still performed alright for my junior year, except for failing algebra two. However, over the summer my father became addicted to heroin and cocaine. By my senior year, he no longer supported me and hadn't worked since my mother died. I had to get a job to support myself, but that also meant sacrificing school. Long story short, I dropped out of school my senior year and got my GED. Now I'm in a community college and about to apply for transfer to FSU. I have again prospered as a student and will apply with no less then a 3.5, (and my A.A) meanwhile I still work full time.

My question is that will FSU look poorly at my GED (as opposed to an actual HS diploma) considering I can't tell them the reason I dropped out. I just fear they will think I was a slacker who dropped out before graduation and overlook my application.

Also, I plan on retaking my SAT before I apply, because I think it may help also. Is that a good idea?

As always, thanks in advance for any help/advice/etc on the subject :)

My boyfriend also dropped out of high school due to hard circumstances. He just got accepted at FSU as an AA transfer. I do not think that having dropped out and getting a GED instead of a high school diploma will have any effect on your chances. The dont really even look at any high school grades and such once you have already started college and are transfering. He never took the SAT either. Pretty much, I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks so much :)

What was his GPA when he applied if you don’t mind me asking?

His GPA is around a 3.8

Thank you :)

Hopefully a 3.6-3.7 will suffice
