GED- University Application, am I "Home Schooled"? Plus Some Other Questions

I got my GED (with honors) last summer due to sleeping problems, and I wasn't willing to repeat 12th grade. So, the upcoming semester will be my second semester at a CC. Got about a 90 average so far (one bad class due to horrible lab partners). I've been checking out some universities to apply to. I'm in CT, so it looks like CCSU would be a natural choice. But looking at rankings, it's not very high. (read note on bottom) Another possibility would be a university in NYC.Not sure of any good natural science schools there, just looks like a lot of social schools. I'm also looking into Boston.

I'm just not convinced that two semester of good CC grades combined with an honors GED (does it even matter if it's honors?) is good enough to get into any of them. Although I must say, having taken the GED test myself, I can tell you that a lot of kids who got a HS diploma would NOT have done well on the GED test. In fact, I think a lot of them wouldn't have passed.

Also, when applying, should I list that I went to HS? Or will this just make my chances of getting in worse? Maybe "Home Schooled" would be the best option? When filling out the GED application, they told me to fill out "Home Schooled" on the forum.

*I'm really looking for this next university to be a foothold for me, a stepping stone to go to a university that actually IS good. I have three that I'm looking at as a final goal for my BS, but these are very good universities, so I'm afraid that if I don't get into a good "steppingstone" university, I won't be able to get into any of my real choices.

Colleges and universities fully recognize the GED as the equivalent of a high school diploma. Since you are currently enrolled at a CC after having completed your GED, almost all of the colleges and universities you apply to will consider you to be a transfer applicant. Contact each of them directly, and ask what academic records they need to see. Some will only need your CC transcripts. Others will want your CC transcripts and certification that you did pass the GED. Still others will want all of that plus official copies of your HS transcripts.

There are a lot of good resources in the Transfer Forum. Go to the main page where all of the forums are listed, and scroll down to find it. Start your reading with the thread at the top titled “Transfer Admissions 101”.

You also should an appointment with the transfer advisor at your CC to learn more about your transfer options. Often it is better to complete a full Associates Degree (or at least a full two years worth of academic credits) before transferring. Some people are successful in transferring twice as you currently propose to do, but most people aren’t. Be sure that wherever you transfer to from your CC is a place you can be happy to finish your studies.

I’m going for a physics degree. I have yet to find even a state university which offers a good program.

I checked over CCSU, and it wasn’t very good. Any Graduate school I apply to will not be inclined to chose me over someone else who has been to a science oriented school.

By the way, the three universities I’m eager to go to are in Europe. Checking their requirements, I should be accepted, as long as I can get into a decent university in the U.S. for next year.

My HS grades are trash, which is why I’m worried about someone asking for them. When I say trash, I mean TRASH. In hindsight, it was better to drop out at 16 when my grades were average.
