punkette's definition seems to be the most accurate in terms of reflecting actual usage.

lionswim: Whoa, only one??? Everyone I know is nerdy!

kitkattail, most of the "brainy" kids at my school are either popular or Asian. A few of them are both.

I know one kid who is REALLY into computer programming, video games, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, everything like that. He wears thick glasses, had braces up until recently, spikes his hair, has no self esteem and expresses any and all emotions in the form of outbursts.

GEEK

But he's nice. Sometimes.

I dunno about you people, but where I'm from a geek is a person who drops out of school to play video games or watch anime and read pornographic fanfiction. and if they don't drop out they still pledge allegience to at least one fandom. a band geek is a toally different species.

nerds are the clean cut kiddies that get good grades and spend all thier time with the track team. they may or may not have a unique personality.

oh crap! well I guess it all depends of your perspective then! oh well

I love mathletes!

The ultimate dorks/nerds/geeks, but also some of the friendliest, smartest, and most popular kids in schools. Doesn't get any better than that.

Wikipedia says:

"Traditionally, a nerd is a very intelligent but lonely and socially awkward person who is fascinated by knowledge, especially science. Beginning in the late 1990s, many nerds on the Internet reclaimed the word nerd as a badge of pride, and began using it as a positive description of any technically competent person, with less implication or focus on social awkwardness. There is currently an ongoing dispute as to whether nerd and geek are synonymous, or if not, as to exactly how they differ. "

so? what's going on? i guess i am a nerd a proud mexican nerd lol :) :);)
i hang out with the mathletes. we're pretty cool and our social status isnt THAT bad. we do, however, eat lunch in our ap calculus classroom. lol
Same here, only we eat in the AP Stat room.

lol i know this is going as a fun-filled shoot-the-breeze thread, but im really against the whole geek/nerd stereotype (ok call me debbie downer now - i admit it). Obviously all of us here are at the top-of-the-food-chain on the academic spectrum and i know all of us have seen the saddening "im depressed" or "im lonely and shy" type threads. A lot of us thrive in being academically motivated and that is awesome, but i think we should get away from the whole nerd/geek thing. When Best Buy has the Geek Squad for computer repairs it boggles my mind how dumb that company can be (even though their store rocks!). Blatantly exploiting a painful stereotype for some people is pretty low...

painful stereotype?

how do you classify a nerd/wrestler/musician?

I want to know

haha.

Nerds = socially inept people.

well yeha okay then, it is a bad stereotype but we do the same with cheerleaders, jocks etc.... basically the entire high school stereotype is awful. I know two major jockst that are bound to be class valedictorians!~

....I prefer the term 'intellectual'. :)

nerds = the smart kids that people still like and invite to parties and also always ask for help even though they occassionally poke fun with the nerd alert when we start using big words or talking about reading books =)

geeks = computer addicts that are intelligent but generally lack common sense and social graces

dork = loser

as you can probably tell, i would be considered a nerd

marymary, your definition is very precise. it's very much like mines. yay. :)
