Gen Chem. 1 & Physics 2 OR Gen Chem. 1 & Calc 1?

Hey! I’m looking for some course pairing recommendations for this upcoming fall semester.

I pretty much want to know whether or not anyone recommends taking gen chem 1 + phys 2 OR gen chem 1 + calc 1. I’m open to other recommendations. (:

I just finished Intro Chem and want to continue taking chem classes until I complete the general and organic chem sequence; I don’t want to break up the sequence as I have heard that it is not recommended. I finished Physics I w/lab (without calc) at Santa Fe in Fall 2017 and I was going to take Physics II w/lab (without calc) in Spring 2018, but I ended up transferring to UF and there were no seats open for Physics II when I registered for classes.

I finished the pre-calculus courses (trigonometry and college algebra) in Spring 2017 at a community college in California and had planned on taking calculus, immediately after, but we ended up moving to Florida. Again, options were limited due to late registration and being out of state = expensive.

Anyways, I did very well in intro chem, physics I, trigonometry, and college algebra. I am comfortable with the material and will review it over the summer to make sure I’m prepared. My primary concern is the combination of classes + potential workload + new material being learned. There is part of me that is concerned about taking Gen Chem 1 + Calc 1 because that will mean that I will need to take Gen Chem 2 + Phys 2 next semester? I don’t know.

If it helps, I’m a sociology major taking pre-health courses. I’m currently registered for 16 units;

  • 4000 level soc course (req. for my major)
  • 3000 level soc course (elective for my major)
  • gen chem 1 w/ lab
  • phys 2 w/ lab

Seriously, I will appreciate any advice or insight!!! (:

Go ahead and sign up for Calc 1, but during add/drop, you will may be able to add Phys 2, and then could drop Calc 1.

If you’re concerned about rigor, you may want to think about Study Edge (google UF Study Edge). You could try it out for a month and see if it’s worth the cost.

Good Luck!

^^2nd the Study Edge suggestion.

I’d be a little queasy about Chem 2 and Physics 2 in the same semester. Would you also be doing the labs? Could you take something next summer?

I’ve heard good things about Study Edge, so I’ll definitely check that out. I feel like it never hurts to have those resources at your disposal.

@SouthFloridaMom9 Yes, I will be taking the labs as well and Chem 2 + physics 2 in the same semester does have me uneasy too! I could perhaps take something next summer, but I’d probably have it be calculus if anything. It sounds like I should stick to taking general chem 1 + physics 2. This is helpful!

Make sure that you place into Calc 1 at UF.

take calc instead of physics…physics 2 is an extremely demanding course and those two together will be extremely difficult whereas most freshman take chm1 and calc 1 together.
