As a woman, I guess it made some difference to me that Mudd has more women than other tech schools. I think I didn’t even apply to CalTech because I thought there would probably be no women there. Actually, I think Mudd is the only tech school I applied to.
CalTech is 2:1 men to women.
MIT is 55:45. That’s nearly indistinguishable from Mudd, isn’t it?
It was the only tech school my D applied to as well. She also liked both the ratio of females to males, and also liked a couple of the women professors she met at accepted student days.
Those numbers are skewed because there are far fewer girls applying that guys.
MIT is 55/45, but they are not strictly a STEM school. 2:1 is 66.6/33.3 as I would read it… that is quite different. @Calicash, have your read this whole thread? Which numbers do you think are “skewed”?
@intparent The one in the OPs initial post. I wasn’t responding to anything else said here.
@intparent. Your daughter has high test scores. How was her GPA? I beg the combo of high GPA and test helped her get in regardless of gender.
3.7 UW GPA at a tough prep school, and also several summer college courses with As that did not get factored into her high school GPA. She was also somewhat geographically diverse (for Mudd), and had some nice state level ECs (both academic and athletic). I also think her essays worked well for Mudd, both her Common App essay and her Mudd-specific ones really fit with the Mudd mission statement. And I think her recommendations were strong and also aligned with what Mudd was looking for.
Oh
But without the test scores, I doubt the rest would have mattered much. The work there is HARD, and they will (really can) only admit students who can keep the pace through the very tough core. She is through core (whew!) now, and holding her own. Taking more physics this semester “just for fun”, too.
Well her test scores are really good.
I stand firm against ANY bias other than academic bias and the recognition of accomplishments. Maria Klawe’s gender bias towards women is pure discrimination against men.
See all that has already been said on this thread. It isn’t bias against men. But it is unlikely that anyone will convince you otherwise.
