Gender Deciding Admission

I was discussing Rice with a friend a few days ago, and found it interesting that he said that Rice only accepts a certain number of males, and a certain number of females. Is this true? I know that Rice tries to keep a fairly equal balance between men and women, but is it to the point where if I were male, a female would not be compared with me since there's a set number of men/women?

It seems a bit silly, but also plausible...

^^^^ Generally there is no gender based affirmative action at top schools (only at tech schools like MIT, Caltech where there tends to be less females than males), so I don’t see why Rice would only want a certain number of males and only a certain number of females.

Call it whatever you like, but the top schools all have close to 50:50 ratios of male to female. Its also a fact that far more females attend college nationwide than do males. At most top schools its a (small) disadvantage to be female. At tech heavy schools fewer females apply than males, so they have (small) advantage there.

^ this depends on major. For engineering, being a female does help, as there are less who seem to apply

this seems to be true in the workforce as well
