Gender Imbalance at Mac

1472 Females to 877 Males. What gives? Why is Mac such a favorite for females, or conversely, why aren’t Males going there? I know that many LAC’s have more females, but this is pretty extreme.

No thoughts on this? This is not idle curiosity. S1 had Mac near the top of his list for a variety of reasons, but has been taken aback by the near 2 to 1 Female to Male ratio.

Somewhere between 55/45 to 60/40 is pretty typical for LACs, based on our research this year. At 63% female, this is a bit higher than the norm, but consistent with what I saw for recent years at Mac (60% +)

The highest I saw was 70/30 but can’t remember where - maybe Sarah Lawrence or Goucher?

Even at large universities, females tend to outnumber males to some degree.

Going off the top of my head, one of the Engineering schools (RPI?) has about 70% Males, but I think Carleton, Amherst, and a host of others are closer to even. Macalester is pretty out of whack for a co-ed institution. Even 60/40 seems really high?

I have no insight on this, but 60/40 was pretty common at the schools my daughter looked at. She is a humanities/social science person, so that might skew it. Tulane was the only one that was more balanced, but that is a very different sort of school than the others she looked at, and ultimately wasn’t attractive to her. For whatever reason, maybe females are more attracted to LACs.

Macalester seems very male-dominated to me - I see what seems like mostly males in the news stories, posting things on various FB pages, etc. - but I went to a women’s college. Daughter just finished her first year, and she didn’t even realize it was this imbalanced.

Thanks for your interest in Mac, @57special (and responses from @UNYMom and @mamaedefamilia). I’d be interested in knowing where you found the numbers you posted because they exceed our total enrollment. Macalester’s spring 2017 enrollment is 60% (1260) female and 40% (843) male. Feel free to DM with additional questions!

It was College niche, I think. Probably from a previous year. Still, not far off. Females far outnumber males.

Tell S1 to look at Macalester as a “target rich environment”.

A 60/40 female male ratio isn’t common at the top 20 LAC’s, unless there historical basis such as Vassar or Wellesley - given their selectivity they are generally able to achieve a 50/50 mix with the exception of Vassar. That said, once you get into the top 20-30 it starts to appear and then beyond the top-40 it’s very clear as it is across the college student population as a whole - need more males to step up!
