General Catalogue

Online it still has 2008-2009. When does the newer one come out? I want to start looking at classes to take.....

the classes are pretty similar anyway so you can just go by those descriptions… there may be some new classes added that might not be in the catalog though. i don’t know when the new one will come out but at spop i was able to buy my hard copy and it was the updated version, so i would assume that some time before then you definitely will be able to see the new one.

also use this to look up the times/dates for your classes
[Schedule of Classes](Schedule of Classes)

and google “zot scheduler” and use that because it will be very useful when planning out your schedule beforehand

I have another question. What does “new only” mean? the other options are full, waitlist and opened…

i think that just means reserved for the new students… incoming freshmen but i’m not sure if it includes transfer students

New Only means that the remaining open spaces are open for new freshman or transfers.

This years catalogue will probably be very similar to next years but next years should be out in july I think? I think it was out during my Spop day. Maybe…

But as jennifer said, the online schedule of classes can show you all the classes next quarter

I have another question. Let’s say I get a 5 on AP calc AB and get go right into math 2B, do I still get credit for 2A? I mean for one of the GE’s I need 2 courses in math and science can I knock out 3 if I go right in Math 2B and then move on to 2D and that’s it (meaning does 2A that i test out of counts as a class)?

Another question I have is this one class I’m looking at there’s like 10 more spots. What are the chances of it getting filled up before I attend SPOP 1 on july 15th?

^ You get 4 units for Math 2A, and it will count towards a GE (Math/Science Category). You will be able to sign up dorectly for Math 2B (Integrals, should be a breeze for you).

There are NO MORE sign up’s for current students. As of now, SPOP 1 will give you the best chances of getting it. As for transfer students, I’m not sure when they will be signing up, but I assume that this is a GE class, so you should be fine! You can always waitlist, chances of you getting in should be high!

So If let’s say i get a 5 on Calc AB and i go into math 2B, skipping 2A and recieving credits for it. I later take math 2D then. Does that mean I complete the whole science/math category (which is 3 courses)?

Thanks for the comfort. I’m also curious as to why some of the classes that are new only already have requests. Is that from transfer students considering no freshman has signed up yet? Thanks in advance.

If you receive credit for Math 2A and take Math 2B and 2D, you’ll compete your GE requirements for category V (Quantitative, Symbolic, and Computational Reasoning); you’ll still need to fulfill category II (Science and Technology).

Only a few classes (e.g., University Studies 3) are exclusively NEW ONLY, but many courses reserve a certain number of spots for new students. (And once the Freshmen finish registering, the NEW ONLY restriction is usually lifted.)

Thanks MaMoose that certainly helped. I am worried about this one class. This physics class I’m looking at is getting filled quickly. The max capacity is 248 (at first it started at 250;kinda odd). 163 are enrolled and there are 239 requests. Why is there a difference between requests and enrolled? Do you think i can get this at spop 1? There is also no new enrollment reserve and not to mentioned the number of requests and enrolled have been going up (must be the transfer students).

Sounds like you’re talking about Physics 7A.

Don’t pay much attention to the “Req” columns… that simply reflects the number of students who hit the “Add” button during registration… they may have subsequently “Removed” it, or the system didn’t accept their enrollment because (in the case of Physics 7A) they didn’t meet the Math prerequisite or are a major in the School of Natural Sciences (that “O” in the Restriction column means "Non-school major only).

What matters is that right now there are 85 open slots. If fewer than 85 qualified transfer need this course, there will still be slots open at SPOP 1. One of the Discussion sections and one of the Lab sections are already full, but hopefully the others will fit into your schedule (note that you need to enroll in a lab section BEFORE you can enroll in the Lecture and Discussion).

So it really depends on how many transfer student sign up. Often, I find it useful to see whether a class filled up the previous year (e.g., Fall, 2008). But last year, UCI offered two large sections of 7A, plus a small one… it’s kinda striking that there’s only the one section this year.

Keep an eye on the “Enr” number over the next few weeks, and try to have a back-up plan when you head to SPOP.

Good luck!

I am a transfer and I need that 7a class, I am in the same boat as you , Sheer reflection, my last lower division course series. But most transfers take physics at their college so i don’t think it will get taken up.

I have another question. Now that i look at the 2008-2009 general catalogue as compared to 2007 i notice some changes:

it doesn’t say it requires you to take physics 7A. It’s not listed under the course courses

it doesn’t even have physics 7B/C and physics physics D shown as a series.

so my question is do I need to take 7A? if so if i don’t get a 4 on the AP physics exam am I already behind than?

Can anyone also tell me how the Physics placement exam is?

The 2009-10 catalogue is out, but I guess you have to buy it? I wonder if they’ll put it up online… because I don’t understand how it’s 6 dollars in person and 15 shipped in California.

[2009-2010 General Catalogue - UCI Bookstore](http://shop.book.uci.edu/ePOS/form=item.html&item=W50000)

@ SheerReflection:
Depending on what AP Physics exam you took (B or C) depends on your placement. If you took B, it doesn’t matter, you just get 8 units of credit. If you took C, you get to place into Physics 7C I believe since you got a 4 on the test.
Depending on the score you get on the Physics Placement Test will determine whether you take 7A or 7C. If you score 80%+ on it, you will skip a quarter of Physics and start at 7C. If you get below, you start in 7A fall quarter. Now don’t be discouraged if you don’t get above an 80% because the majority of the people take 7A because it’s easier and it’s at a slower pace than just taking 7C and 7D.
The placement test was a little difficult, but then again physics wasn’t my best subject. The 7 series is a little tough but it’s okay.

Im going to be a freshman physics major, so do I get any kind of priority signing up for physics 7 series since I have to take it? Im attending SPOP 1, so im not too worried, just wondering.
Also, do a lot of people test out of 7A? I don’t want to start out behind the rest of the physics majors if I end up taking 7A…

if it’s a major only class, in that sense you have priority because not just anyone can enroll

So we actually choose our classes at our SPOP sessions right? I’m wondering if I should buy the General Catalogue for 09-10 before actually attending the session since I have no idea what classes I’m going to take.

yes you will be enrolling in classes at spop. do you have a major? if so they will usually tell you what to take for your first quarter/year. you can buy the hard copy of the catalog if you want, but you can also look at the pdf one online of this past year since the class descriptions are pretty much the same.

Undecided :/. I guess that was my other question, whether or not last year’s was still reliable this year. I guess I’ll just look through that one.
