general chances for a junior

hey i'm a current junior. i've been lurking around here for a while, reading others' posts, but decided to post for myself. schools i'm currently thinking about (kind of a long list, will be narrowed down over the summer when i visit): boston college, harvard, yale, princeton, penn, villanova, johns hopkins, georgetown, william & mary. i know the ivies are going to be tough, but if you guys could just let me know if i'm on the right track, that'd be great. thanks!

ACT: 34 with a 10 on writing
[i'm retaking next month]

GPA: weighted is around 4.2, should continue to go up every semester as long as i continue getting the grades i have been.
I get straight As, with the very occasional A-
I take all honors classes, and pretty much all the AP classes that are offered at my school (not many). This year I'm in AP US History and AP English language. Next year I'll take AP Statistics and AP English literature.

Rank: not exact, but i think 8 out of about 200, so top 4%. again, i'll probably climb up a little bit after this semester.

ECS: member of the math team, newspaper, ambassadors, peer tutor, NHS, played JV lacrosse for 2 years, involved with Amnesty International, went to the state capitol to lobby for acts benefiting the homeless, volunteer at my local library

it's still kind of vague since i haven't finished junior year yet, but any insight would be good. thanks again.

You have very strong academics and test scores, not sure why you’re retaking the ACT! That’s a really good score.

As far as school goes, you have a kick-a GPA. I’m taking the same APs as you this year (though you performed better than me). Your rank is fantastic.

Your ECs, admittedly, are a bit bland, but I think everyone’s are…unless you do something outrageously amazing!

All in all, you have a good chance at all those schools. Wish ya luckkk (:

thank you

to clarify about the ACT, it’s not so much that i’m focused on raising my score, i’m happy with a 34. however, i had already signed up to take it again before i got my scores (in order to be able to get in to a test center close to my house, which i wasn’t able to do the first time because it was full). so since i kind of assumed i’d have to retake it, now i’m kind of stuck in it, since you can’t get your money back. i could just not take it, but i figure it’s not going to hurt me, so i might as well just do it.

i was going to include that in there since i knew some people would probably question it, but ended up not.

your rank and gpa is excellent. those schools are all very good with little reaches for you.

do you mind chancing me?

thanks!

I have to agree your EC’s aren’t really specific. You played JV lacrosse for 2 years. What happened? Why didn’t you play on varsity?

Yeah, I was kind of vague. I’ve seen some people telling others their posts are way too long and a pain to read, so I wanted to be brief since I’m just looking for a general idea. I can be more specific, though.

Math Team: I’ve been on it for 10th and 11th grade, plan to continue my senior year. (Received a Letter in it this year, which entails accumulating a high number of points at the meets)
Newspaper: I have been a writer for the school newspaper since my freshman year, plan on continuing through the rest of high school. Unfortunately it has gone downhill and hardly exists at this point, but I received a Letter in this last year, due to writing 2 articles per issue
Ambassadors: I was accepted as an ambassador going into my junior year, and plan to continue next year. As an ambassador, I come to open houses for prospective students, give tours, and attend social events for incoming freshmen.
Peer tutoring: I was accepted going into my junior year, and will continue next year. I have tutored an underclassman twice a week after school for the whole school year in biology (which i hope to major in).
NHS: I was just accepted into NHS a few weeks ago (at my school it’s seniors only), so I don’t have much about it yet. I plan to run for a position on the executive board, possibly treasurer or secretary.
Amnesty International: I’ve become very involved in my school’s chapter of AI. I have helped to organize a homeless awareness week, participated in a memorial march for homeless who have died, and visited shelters. Also, I attended meetings for a month to become informed about and prepare for a trip to the state capitol to lobby for acts that help the homeless.
Lacrosse: This is something that I hope will not put me at a disadvantage, although I’m afraid might come off as a lack of commitment. I played JV lacrosse in 9th and 10th grade, but after we got new coaches, it was not something that I got enjoyment out of anymore. Although I love the sport, I decided not to continue in something that took up 6 days a week of my time if I didn’t even enjoy it anymore due to the political nature of the coaches.
Library: I put in many hours of service at my local library, volunteering for an hour every week for 6 months.

This summer, I am going on a week-long service trip to Kentucky to build houses in a very poor area.

Hope that helps and adds some substance!

Okay that lacrosse thing i understand better now. You should write that in your essay or give some sort of explanation otherwise you will come off as lazy or having a lack of commitment

boston college, villanova, and william & mary would be low matches
jhu would be a mid-match.
gtown and penn would be low reaches
the rest would be mid or high reaches, as they are for everyone
